Netflix has added a number of good movies to its streaming catalog, ranging from a couple of Scorsese ’90s classics to a couple of ’80s comedy classics to a couple of relatively recent instances of Jeremy Renner scowling. Here are 25 viewing recommendations, and please note, these titles are all current on the service as of March 10, 2018.
‘10,000 B.C.’
Let’s kick off this list with our Box of Wine pick, a sub-moronic caveman/cavewoman movie from director Roland “Independence Day” Emmerich that’s impossible to sit through sober. It’s at least true to the Hollywood tradition of depicting cavepersons with obvious access to a range of beauty products, including teeth whitener, eyebrow tweezers and eyeliner.
‘Adventureland’
This 2009 charmer starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds and Martin Starr as amusement-park employees looking for direction in their lives bullseyes the sweet spot between comedy and drama.
‘Apollo 13’
Did you know: Ron Howard is much more than Richie Cunningham – he’s also a bona-fide movie director! (Ron Howard narrator voice: You already know.)
This is probably Howard’s best movie, although “Star Wars” fans hope that’ll no longer be true after that Han Solo movie debuts later this year.
‘Batman’
Brutal truth time: This is not as good as you remember it. I mean, everything after that ridiculous scene soundtracked by Prince’s “Batdance” is a junked-up mess. But watching Jack (we can just call him “Jack,” right?) in action as the Joker is always a delightful dance with the devil in the something something.
