Fashion standouts: Find out our favorite looks from the Independent Spirit Awards

Should anyone forget that is a major daytime awards show held by the beach in Santa Monica, there were plenty of casual yet glamorous fashion statements made on Saturday afternoon to remind us.

From stripes to spots, patterns were rife on the show’s signature blue carpet, including Dree Hemingway’s red-dotted floor-grazing Prada gown and a nautical number worn by “The Big Sick” co-writer Emily V. Gordon, who took the stage alongside husband Kumail Nanjiani to accept their award for best first screenplay.

Stylist Ashley Weston dressed “Black Panther’s” Chadwick Boseman, one of the presenters, in a polka-dotted navy-blue Burberry blazer. “I loved the playfulness of the jacket, and coupled with the light silk fabric, it became the perfect choice for this daytime event,” she said.

“Call Me By Your Name’s” Timothée Chalamet, winner of best male lead, also offered his own interpretation of the laidback dress code in an Off White c/o Virgil Abloh white utility shirt from the pre-fall ’18 men’s collection, worn with black pants and white sneakers. So did “Mudbound’s” Garrett Hedlund, who looked effortlessly cool in a patterned shirt and green blazer, one of the looks from his stylist Ilaria Urbinati’s newly released collaboration with Strong Suit.

There was also no shortage of thigh-skimming dresses for the occasion, starting with best female lead nominee of “I, Tonya,” who donned a sequined leopard print, zip-up Louis Vuitton dress, teamed with chunky black heels. “Lady Bird’s” Saoirse Ronan, nominated for best female lead, channeled the ’60s in a paillette-encrusted mini metallic Prada dress, and co-star Beanie Feldstein also went the short route in a sleeveless black, flower-printed frock.

“I, Tonya’s” Allison Janney, who nabbed the best supporting female award, opted for a curve-hugging custom pink cutout Pamela Rolland gown with a daring thigh slit, paired with matching Stuart Weitzman heels. Best screenplay winner of “Lady Bird” also showed some skin in a whimsical backless custom, lace-trimmed blue Rosie Assoulin frock with black Jimmy Choo heels. Presenter Amanda Seyfried stepped out in an asymmetrical white lace dress with a high neck and strategically placed cutouts at the chest and hips.

What was mostly absent from the blue carpet? The politically charged fashion statements that have lit up every major awards show of 2018. At the Golden Globes in January, there was an all-black dress code, and white roses were worn later at the Grammys as stars took a stand against sexual discrimination. Through the awards season, most celebrities and nominees have worn Time’s Up pins on their lapels.

Viewers might see more political statements being made on the red carpet at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday. Recent news reports have suggested stars and nominees will take a stand against gun violence by wearing pins from the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety.
