Reopened and now closing
Pier 1 Imports in Grand Chute reopened Friday after being closed for about two months during the coronavirus shutdown.
But it immediately began its going-out-of-business sale.
Pier 1 sells imported furniture and home goods.
The company filed for bankruptcy in February, a month after it announced the closure of 450 of its 936 stores.
It is now closing the remainder of its stores.
Pier I Imports has had a presence in the Appleton area for 47 years.
It opened its first store in 1973 in downtown Appleton at 115 W. College Ave., according to Post-Crescent archives.
It moved to the Fox River Mall in the late 1980s, and then to its current 4717 Michaels Drive address, at the corner of Casaloma Drive, in mid 2004.
Employees said there was no end date set for the liquidation.
Open (for pickup/delivery)
Metal Supermarkets Appleton opened for business Monday at 1890 S. Technology Drive in Grand Chute, an industrial area northeast of the County CB/Prospect Avenue intersection.
It’s a retailer that sells metal in any quantity large or small, said local franchise owner Chad Scheibe.
Customers include companies like machine and fabricating shops as well as individuals who do repair, maintenance, remodeling and hobbies.

Opened again
Sconnie Athletic Co., a hockey and lacrosse equipment and apparel store, opened just one week before the mandatory coronavirus shutdown.
It has now reopened at 4876 W. Lawrence St. in Grand Chute, in the Verlo building.
Owner Eric Marsh, well known in hockey and lacrosse circles, carries sport-specific apparel and equipment for adults and kids, plus custom apparel and uniforms.

Hotels reopen
Several hotels that closed during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak have now reopened.
Courtyard by Marriott on Appleton’s riverfront, which closed in March, reopened this past week.
CopperLeaf Boutique Hotel & Spa in downtown Appleton reopened last week after a closure of about six weeks. Rye, the attached restaurant, added new outdoor seating.
