Reader question: Would it be possible to get a list of black-owned restaurants in the Fox Valley? I would like a list of places we should frequent in support of all the protesting.
Answer: The greater Appleton area has a handful of restaurants that are black-owned or have partners who are black. Some have seen more business in the last few weeks in light of the Black Lives Matter protests. Members of the community are seeking them out to show support.
Natasha Banks, one of the established black business owners in the area, opened The Cozzy Corner in 2012. She sold that restaurant last November, but continues to be a consultant to it as well as partner in another food venture, The Jerk Joint.
She said the community has sought out black-owned businesses of all kinds in the last few weeks.
“I’ve seen an increase in business at the The Jerk Joint and Cozzy as well. Business is decent,” said Banks. “Covid did a number on everyone, but considering the situation we’re all pretty blessed. I’m glad to have the beauty and barbershops back open.”
“The reaction has been great,” said Philip Bennett, who bought The Cozzy Corner from Banks in November. “We’ve seen some new faces.”

•Miss Brown’s Fine Foods II, 400 N. Richmond St., Appleton. Owner Phill Brown is grandson of the original Jamaica-based Miss Brown. His mom, Jean, is in the kitchen cooking a revolving menu of jerk chicken, oxtails, curry goat and saltfish with fried dumplings. Available for carryout. Info: Facebook, 920-358-7060
•Peters’ Boyz Texas BBQ, N378 Military Road, Sherwood. Carry-out only for slow-cooked meats, ribs, pulled pork, fried avocado and okra. Info: Facebook, 920-989-0239
•Wilder’s Bistro, 2639 S. Oneida St., Appleton. Has curbside carry-out or delivery through food delivery services. The inside dining rooms and lounge have not resumed inside seating so far. Pharmacy
