The Chainsmokers singer clears up Syracuse rumor

Syracuse University alumnus Drew Taggart has responded to a longtime rumor about The Chainsmokers’ biggest hit, “Closer” (feat. Halsey), which reached No. 1 in 2016 and topped the charts for 12 weeks. Taggart said last year that he wrote the foundational chords for the Grammy-nominated song while he was at SU and some of the lyrics were inspired by his actual college experience. A friend actually stole a mattress from another friend while they were moving out of a dorm room, but the line “roommate back in Boulder” was not originally a reference to SU’s Boland Hall (rumored to be a “roommate back in Boland”). During the Syracuse University Office of Alumni Engagement’s “Senior Sips” virtual toast to the class of 2020 on Thursday, the 2012 graduate of Syracuse’s Bandier music program and Visual and Performing Arts school clarified the story.

“Pretty much that entire song, every line refers to someone or something or some experience at Syracuse,” Taggart told graduating students over a Zoom video chat. “However, I did say ‘roommate back in Boulder,’ not Boland, which I heard was a huge debate. I did live in BBB (Brewster, Boland and Brockway halls) my freshman year but a lot of my friends went to school in Boulder so unfortunately that is where I pulled the reference from.”

‘The King of Staten Island’ trailer

Pete Davidson is having his breakout moment in the first trailer for “The King of Staten Island,” a semi-autobiographical movie directed by Judd Apatow. The “SNL” star follows up the Syracuse-shot “Big Time Adolescence” with the movie about Davidson struggling to find his purpose after the death of his father, a New York firefighter who died on 9/11, and confront his grief as his mother (Marisa Tomei) starts dating a firefighter (Bill Burr). “The King of Staten Island” will be released on VOD on June 12.
