Letter: Walnut Creek shouldn’t honor any controversial lifestyle – The Mercury News

A Walnut Creek resident talks to others holding a rainbow flag — recognized as the flag for LGBTQ pride — as they await a council decision to move forward with a resolution declaring June “pride month” in the city and raising the flag on a city flagpole. Why did the Walnut Creek City Council decide the city would fly the gay pride flag will over City Hall every June?

Why are we continually pressured to honor this particular choice of lifestyle? Has the gay community contributed more to our community than the churches that feed our homeless, and provide free after-school programs and free counseling to desperate people?

I personally don’t think our City Council should be promoting or honoring with a flag, any lifestyle or any ideology that is controversial, including my own.

This city belongs to all of its residents. To be respectful in their actions, the City Council must not promote their personal preferences above the comfort and happiness of all the residents of this city. They should be helping us to peacefully coexist — not deciding to fly flags of division.

We do not all need to think alike, as long as we can be respectful and kind to each other in our actions.
