10 Things That Already Haven’t Aged Well About Gossip Girl – Screen Rant

Since it first began airing all the way back in 2007, Gossip Girl began dealing with a few rather intense subjects, especially for a show aimed directly at teenagers. At the time, the world was a very different place, full of very different opinions and a lot more was free to be discussed on television.

We’ve delved into ten elements of Gossip Girl that don’t really hold up today. From majorly controversial storylines to minor moments.

10 The Gossip Girl Reveal

If there is one thing that aged poorly about Gossip Girl, it was its ending. It was a shocking and exciting twist at first, with the audience being gobsmacked by the idea that Dan was Gossip Girl the whole time. However, it quickly became apparent that it made no sense.

As time went on and people re-watched the series, plot holes were found left, right, and center, turning the show’s biggest twist into a reveal that undermines everything we had previously seen.

9 Rufus And Ivy

The Rufus and Ivy relationship was weird even as it happened, but it certainly isn’t one that is going to become more normal as time goes on.

Not only isn’t crazy on the behalf of Rufus to have dated someone who is obviously so morally corrupt and had such a direct impact on his family, but it’s also a little weird for Ivy: relatively rich former Rockstar possibly abusing his power?

8 Sleeping With Teachers

Both Serena and Dan slept with their teachers. The fact that these two are the main characters in the show makes this seem like a normal thing, when in fact it’s very rare and highly illegal.

Serena’s teacher rightfully ended up in jail for his abuse of power, but Dan’s simply wandered off and never looked back. It seems weird that this storyline just fizzled out, as it would be a major news item in real life today.

7 Serena And Dan Are Basically Related

Not by blood. It needs to be made rather clear that Serena and Dan aren’t actually brother and sister, and there is nothing creepy and incestuous about their relationship. However, the fact that Lily and Rufus were dating made things weird enough for them that they broke up at one point.

The thing that didn’t stop them getting married, however, is that Lily and Rufus quite literally have a child together. This pretty much turns Serena and Dan into a weird sort of sibling type thing which is just so strange.

6 Chuck’s Sexual Assault

In the very first episode, Chuck Bass attempts to assault the fourteen-year-old Jenny. Obviously, in the real world, Chuck would be taken to court and ousted by everyone who ever knew him.

For some reason, Gossip Girl doesn’t only basically forgive him for his crime straight away, but Jenny’s brother Dan doesn’t seem to care at all within about a week, and Jenny even goes on to lose her virginity to her assaulter. This wouldn’t fly today.

5 Blair And Chucks’ Relationship As A Whole

The relationship between Blair and Chuck is something that kept viewers interested in Gossip Girl, even during its quality decline. However, it never really made much sense. The two were obviously incredibly in love but messed each other around for so long that it pretty much seemed like they hated each other at times.

Today, they’d have probably just given up on the whole thing.

4 Chuck’s Bar Ownership

One of Blair’s schemes saw her attempt to bring down Vanessa by having Chuck pretend to buy a bar she wanted to save.

However, he ended up liking it and actually did buy it. This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, because Chuck was too young to drink himself, so certainly too young to run a venue that sells alcohol.

3 In Fact, Pretty Much Everyone’s Jobs

Beyond Chuck’s ownership of the bar, a lot of the other jobs the show presents don’t make much sense: Nate ends up becoming the editor of a newspaper when he’s not even twenty (would never happen).

Jenny becomes a well-known fashion designer when just a child (no chance); and Dan gets an unsolicited manuscript printed in a national newspaper (they wouldn’t even read it).

2 Overt, Non-Stop Bullying

The entire premise of Gossip Girl is built on a complex and never-ending web of bullying. Whether it’s from Blair or Jenny or Gossip Girl himself, this wouldn’t hold up today.

The tearing down of everyone’s lives is a tough thing to watch at times, and it might be a little too real to base the entirety of a TV show around that these days.

1 Dorota

The whole concept of Dorota is something that probably wouldn’t make it onto today’s screens. While she is hilarious and well-loved, her costume would never be something a maid would actually wear.

Add in her portrayal as a Polish immigrant who is subservient to the rich Americans who employ her is a little too close to racism.
