Despite the widespread business shutdown during the coronavirus outbreak, construction forges ahead.

A sampling of some projects underway now, plus a few that appear to be on the back burner.

Downtown Appleton apartment buildings

Gabriel Lofts, the apartment building on the site of the former Gabriel Furniture, completed construction and saw its first tenants move in earlier this month. Nine apartments are now leased in both the new and refurbished old sections of the building at 201 E. College Ave. A dozen more are listed as available for $1,200 to $1,895. A financial institution, currently unnamed, is taking 5,400 square feet of the first-floor commercial space.

Avant will have 33 apartments ready in early August on N. Durkee Street between College Avenue and Washington Street. The 1- and 2-bedroom apartments are $1,125 to $1,650. It first floor will be used for an exercise room, lounge, work stations and a patio.

“Block 800” is the future mixed-use apartment/commercial building in the 800 block of W. College Avenue. Pierri Pizza and Quick Print are on one side and JJ’s Laundromat is on the other. Buildings on the site have been demolished. “Even with the current environment, we are full speed ahead,” said Kip Golden of CR Structures, which is managing construction for a group of local investors. The building will have underground parking, retail/commercial space on its ground floor and 20 apartments above. Occupancy is slated for March 2021.

RiverHeath

Willow, the newest and largest RiverHeath building, opens in June on the Fox River in Appleton. The $25 million building has 110 apartments priced $975 to $2,000, office and commercial space. Retail tenants include Poppy Avenue Boutique and Alyssa & Anna Jewelers. “We have retail available overlooking the river, similar to the Tempest space,” said Mark Geall of Tanesay Development. “Progress is on track. Leasing is going well.”

REI Co-op

REI Co-op’s opening date was originally supposed to be in mid May. The new store is at the northeast corner of W. Wisconsin Avenue and Interstate 41, on the north end of the WG&R-led retail development in Grand Chute. “We have, unfortunately, had to postpone our opening in Appleton. We don’t have an updated open date yet,” said spokeswoman Cailtin Goettler. When it can resume hiring, she said information will be posted at rei.jobs. REI sells outdoor equipment and apparel, and is currently operating online while its stores are closed.

Pizza Ranch

Pizza Ranch broke ground on a new restaurant in Grand Chute earlier this month. It will be its second in the Fox Cities. The Integrity Way site is across the street from Costco. It will take about six months to build, putting its opening around October. The company is currently in discussions on how to make its buffet set up safer and more hygienic given the new standards put in place during the coronavirus outbreak.

Amazon?

The tenant taking the large distribution warehouse on County CB in Greenville — widely thought to be Amazon — still hasn’t been confirmed by the company or the town. Amazon has several jobs listed for Appleton on its website, but it’s not known if those jobs have anything to do with the new Greenville building.

Former Northtown Lighting

The Vine Christian Fellowship purchased the former Northtown Lighting building at 720 Ridgeview Drive in Grand Chute, according to Department of Revenue records. The Vine is a nondenominational church that currently leases space at 3395 W. College., the strip mall that also includes Harbor Freight Tools.

Casey’s General Store

Casey’s General Store planned two new locations in the Fox Cities, but both appear to be on hold at the moment.

Casey’s previously submitted plans to Menasha’s plan commission for a new convenience store/gas station at the site of the former B.J. Clancy’s at the corner of Oneida Street and Midway Road. The existing building would be demolished in its plans. The closing date for the sale was March 31, but this past week online real estate documents still listed the building’s sale as “pending.”

Casey’s also previously submitted site plans to Grand Chute’s plan commission for the construction of a convenience store/gas station on the site of the former Tri City Glass, 100 W. Northland Ave. Its plans said the existing building would be torn down.

Casey’s spokeswoman Katie Petru said there are no current updates on either proposed site.
