This week is all about 2017. Three years ago, WONDER WOMAN hit the big screen and changed the face of the superhero genre forever. Later this year, WONDER WOMAN 1984 is poised to take the top spot in the 2020 box office.

The Shape of Water
2017 Best Picture winner, THE SHAPE OF WATER is not your average creature feature. Set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963, it is a visually spectacular and heart-stirring film about love, loss and acceptance of “the other.” Writer-director-producer Guillermo Del Toro took risks for this unique film, which ultimately paid off.

Get Out
GET OUT premiered in February 2017 and solidified writer-director-producer Jordan Peele’s place as a strong, creative voice in the horror genre. The provocative social commentary follows a young African American man (Daniel Kaluuya) who becomes entangled in a sinister plan when he visits his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) family for the weekend.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi
The penultimate chapter in the Star Wars Saga was the top grossing movie of 2017, bringing in more than $620 million at the domestic box office. Rian Johnson took over the director’s helm, and the cast of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS returned (Daisey Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac) alongside original STAR WARS cast members (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher) to reprise their roles.

The Oscar Contenders
The 2018 Academy Awards, which recognized 2017 movies, were huge for the horror and sci-fi genres. THE SHAPE OF WATER won Best Picture and Jordan Peele won Best Original Screenplay for GET OUT, becoming the first African American to receive the honor.
Along with THE SHAPE OF WATER, there were many outstanding movies nominated for Best Picture, including CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, DUNKIRK, GET OUT, LADY BIRD, PHANTOM THREAD, THE POST and THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI.
Frances McDormand took home the Best Actress statuette for her role in THREE BILLBOARDS. Other nominees included Sally Hawkins (THE SHAPE OF WATER), Margot Robbie (I, TONYA), Saoirse Ronan (LADY BIRD) and Meryl Streep (THE POST).
Gary Oldman won Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in DARKEST HOUR, a strong category that included Timothee Chalamet (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME), Daniel Day-Lewis (PHANTOM THREAD), Daniel Kaluuya (GET OUT) and Denzel Washington (ROMAN J. ISRAEL, ESQ).
