Kimberley Walsh reveals her son Cole is best friends with Cheryl’s son Bear – OK! magazine
It’s not a bad day at work when you get to spend it at the beach. And that’s what Kimberley Walsh got to do for her latest project.
The 38-year-old travelled to the beautiful beach village of Santander in Spain to shoot her first SS20 collection with Regatta Great Outdoors.
Back in the UK, Kimberley is planning her return to the West End stage to star in Sleepless: A Musical Romance with her Big The Musical co-star Jay McGuiness later in the year.
The former Girls Aloud star says her confidence has grown when it comes to performing on the stage, but she’ll only accept new projects if she can make them work around her busy family life with her husband Justin Scott and their sons, Bobby, five, and Cole, three.
Here, Kimberley tells OK! about play dates with Cheryl, why she’s so proud of Nicola Roberts’ triumph in The Masked Singer, and why she no longer cares what people think…
You and Justin have celebrated your fourth wedding anniversary, that seems to have gone very quickly…
It’s crazy. I also have to say 17 years together because four years married sounds a bit rubbish! We’re three years away from being together for 20 years and we are proud of that.
The kids are starting to understand it now, but Cole is really not happy that he wasn’t part of our wedding. He can’t even watch the videos! He’s like, “Where am I?” I’m almost having to lie and say that he was in my tummy because he’s not having it that he wasn’t there!
Would you renew your vows so Cole could be a part of the celebrations?
Yeah. I mean, I think I’m just looking for any excuse to go back to Barbados, where we got married, to celebrate like that again! When it gets to ten years, I will definitely try to do something. I never even thought about having a ceremony to renew our vows, but maybe to just all be there again and celebrate together.
Would you like more children?
I feel like I’m one of those people who could never say no, but then I don’t know if I want one right now. I’m not ruling out having another baby, but life is pretty chilled at the moment so I wonder if I’d be crazy to upset that. I’ve always wanted a big family.
Would you like to have a little girl?
I’m not really bothered about the sex. My sister has three boys and I love the three of them together.
They are all completely different so you can’t help but think, what would another boy be like? I’d be happy either way.
Do Cole and Cheryl’s son Bear get on well?
Yeah, we’re really lucky that they get on so well. Bear always asks if he can come over to my house to play, and Cole always asks if he can go over to Cheryl’s house. It’s really cute.
Then we have to quickly organise something. The babies dictate it now! We try to make the effort to get together as it’s lovely to catch up, but it’s also lovely for the boys to keep that friendship. We have a really nice network with my sister and some friends who all have kids the same age.
Nadine Coyle recently said it would take “so much” for Girls Aloud to reunite. Do you agree?
Everyone is just doing their own thing. I know what she means – it’s hard to think of everything falling into place at the right time. Often, when a reunion happens, people have fully retired and they’re not really in the business anymore, but because we’re all doing something in some capacity, it would be hard to find a time when everyone felt like they wanted to do it. But never say never.
Apparently a 20th anniversary tour has been planned. I don’t want to ruin the fun, but there aren’t any plans!
Would you do it if everything aligned?
I wouldn’t say no, and I wouldn’t rule it out! There’s so much joy and many good memories of that time because it was such a fun band to be in, and it would be nice for the kids to see what we do.
Tell us about Sleepless: A Musical Romance…
It will be really fun. I’ve got the bug again! Jay McGuiness is a dream to work with. When I fell on stage in Big, he did a pretend fall straight after to make me feel better. I’ve been enjoying these short runs of shows. The kids wouldn’t like it if I had a year-long contract, which I can understand, so I wouldn’t do that. It’s definitely high on my bucket list to perform on Broadway, but I think I should have probably done that before I had kids.
You said when you fell on stage, it didn’t bother you what people thought because of where you are in your life right now…
I think you just realise how age and having kids changes you. I definitely don’t care as much. I do think when I was younger, I really cared what people thought of me. I don’t think I’m that person any more. And I can definitely leave auditions at the door, whereas before I would probably stress if I’d done something I wasn’t happy with. I do still get nervous though.
You also said you were worried you might wet yourself when you were doing jumps on stage…
I didn’t actually wet myself, but the fear is always there! I’m actually really lucky with that, but I think being active, dancing and running is the only way to help it. I feel the best that I could possibly be right now, because of being active. My body feels back to what it was, more than it has for quite a lot of years.
How did you feel when Nicola won The Masked Singer?
I knew it was her from the very first show because her voice is just so distinctive and I know it better than I know my own voice. She obviously wasn’t able to tell me it was her, but I just knew. It was amazing that she won, she did absolutely incredibly in every single performance. I couldn’t be more proud of her.
I’m so excited to watch her in City Of Angels. I’ve been telling her to do a show for years. I think she knows what she’s comfortable with and she tends to stay within those realms, so she’s really pushing herself out of her comfort zone. I hope I’m right that she’ll get so much out of it.
Tell us about your new collection with Regatta Great Outdoors…
It’s a collection for all women, and I love that. Every jacket goes up to size 20, and the Bertille jacket comes in sizes 10-32. It also incorporates all my favourite colours. One of my absolute favourites is the dusky blue Narelle jacket. It has a concealed hood and it’s softer than other waterproof fabrics. There is also a mac, something for a festival, the country and some parkas. There’s something for all eventualities and all weathers, and they are not only practical but they look really good.
It’s the perfect partnership for me, with the kids being out and about all the time. My friends say they’re jealous as I always have the right gear!
Your collection is very stylish. Were you determined not to lose your sense of style after you became a mum?
Yeah, it’s sort of evolved. I’ve always been someone who has really dressed more to my shape, rather than being too much of a slave to fashion. There was a time when I probably lived the majority of my life in 4in heels, and I can say that’s definitely not the case now! It’s a special occasion if the four-inchers come out!
You just make things work for you that are practical but still stylish. Thankfully there’s a trainer and sports trend that’s come in, which is brilliant for me. It’s led really well into this collection. The boys love being outside and it does help that I’m kitted out for the weather with the jackets and fleeces.
What balance do you strike between screen time and being outdoors with the boys?
I’m quite lucky that they will go on their iPads if I need them to, but they’re not massively into sitting on them for long periods of time. They’re quite active boys. Bobby is more likely to be making or building stuff.
It’s obviously a bit of a nightmare at times as he just transforms my living room into a den and I’m like, where have you even got all this furniture from? He loves it and it’s all his imagination and so I just let him get on with it.
If he’s not doing that, he’s building things with cardboard and Sellotape. He’s very creative. It does annoy me that I find random bits of cardboard all over my house, but I’d rather that than him be sat on his iPad all day. A lot of things they watch are actually quite beneficial. Bobby is learning to read and write and he’s really into word songs.
