It was a week in which everything was turned upside-down. Each day, more businesses closed in an effort to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Some were voluntary closures and some were closed by state mandates. On Tuesday, restaurants could no longer serve customers in their dining rooms, but could still offer carry out and delivery.
A recap:
Retail stores
The Fox River Mall, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Bed Bath & Beyond and many smaller stores closed this past week.
Some mall stores that remain open include Target and stores selling essential goods like medications, eyeglasses, medical services and food. Pearle Vision, for example, is also open by appointment. “The cafe court doors are unlocked from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mall security has a list of our patients for the day and they’ll assist patients getting to our office,” said Dr. Rick Davison.

Stores that remain open elsewhere throughout the Fox Cities include pharmacies, grocery stores, warehouse clubs and hardware stores. Many have reduced hours to allow more time for restocking and cleaning. Some, like Best Buy, limit the number of customers in the store. Call stores directly, as hours and circumstance can change without notice.

For seniors
Some stores have designated special hours for seniors only. They include:
Pick ‘n Save: 6-8 a.m. daily
Walmart: 6-7 a.m. every Tuesday for customers 60 and older
Target: 8-9 a.m. every Wednesday for seniors and those with underlying medical conditions
Dollar General: Encourages younger customers to wait until 9 a.m. to shop, allowing seniors to shop from 8-9 a.m. every day.
More closures
On Friday, Gov. Tony Evers ordered the closure of all hair salons, barber shops, nail salons, day spas, tattoo parlors, body art establishments and tanning facilities to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Restaurants
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, restaurants and bars were bound by state law to close their doors to customers. The mandate still allowed them to make food for carry out and delivery.
More than 100 Fox Cities restaurants are now offering to-go meals.

New restaurants
Two new restaurants planned to open this past week.
Author’s Kitchen + Bar did open with carryout and delivery only at 125 E. College Ave. in downtown Appleton.
Little Siam, however, postponed its opening indefinitely in downtown Neenah.
Hotel closure
The Courtyard by Marriott hotel on Appleton’s Riverfront will close Wednesday and remain closed for five weeks. It is either the first or one of the first Fox Cities hotels to close during the coronavirus outbreak.
