The Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Appleton will temporarily close next Wednesday.
It appears to be the first Fox Cities hotel to impose a temporary closure during the coronavirus outbreak.
“Courtyard Appleton Riverfront will close on March 25 and reopen on May 4, said general manager Cindy Evers. “We feel this is the best decision so we can keep our staff and guests safe.”
The hotel is in the RiverHeath development on the Fox River, between the College Avenue bridge and Telulah Park.
A spot check at Friday noon showed a number of other hotels remained open, including the CopperLeaf Boutique Hotel and Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley.
“I have not been notified of any other closings,” said Pam Seidl, executive director of the Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau.
On Tuesday, Marriott International said it was poised to put tens of thousands of its employees on furlough as it struggled because of travel cancellations during the COVID-19 spread.
Marriott had about 174,000 employees globally at the end of 2019, according to USA Today. Workers on furlough will not be paid, but will receive health care benefits.
“The company hopes to bring the workers back onto its payroll as soon as practicable when the pandemic subsides,” USA Today’s Nathan Bomey reported.
