While initially aiming to keep the show going as planned, despite the coronavirus outbreak, due to the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vegan Fashion Week (VFW) is now going to be sharing their message without a live audience.
“I am trying to still share a message while putting the security of everybody as a first priority. As of now, the event will be streamed online with no audience and behind closed doors,” Rienda said. “It is so important to create a positive message of hope. As an activist, I cannot stay silent.”
Initially planned for April 3-4 in Los Angeles, this year’s theme for VFW is “Expansion”—a look at environmental challenges through fashion, ethics, sustainability, and animal rights. The event was suppoosed to include a designer showroom, panel series, and the actual fashion show. Now, with the shift of format, some of the show’s original features will be omitted, but Rienda is determined to maintain the message of her organization, which she feels is relevant, due to the coronavirus’ spread, in addition to similar pandemics in the past.
“This situation is directly linked to animal exploitation, like all the virus outbreaks the world is experiencing—Ebola, mad cow, swine flu [as examples],” Rienda said. “The social injustice happening in our country is also a very big topic to discuss in an artistic way.”
