Disney gives Onward surprise digital, Disney Plus release dates – Polygon
Onward hits digital download on Friday and will stream on Disney Plus starting April 3 per a Disney announcement. The Pixar movie hit theaters just two weeks ago on March 6. It joins titles like Emma, Bloodshot, and Birds of Prey in jumping from theatrical release to digital in an expedited window.
As theaters around the country close doors due to COVID-19 concerns, more movies are jumping from their brief theatrical windows to digital download and streaming. Trolls World Tour, which comes out in theaters on April 10, will also be available on digital that day. Disney previously move upped the streaming release date of Frozen 2. Other upcoming movies, such as Disney’s Mulan, have been delayed.
“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” said director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae in a press release.
Onward takes place in a magical world, where creatures like elves and centaurs live alongside one another, but technology has more or less replaced magic. Two brothers, Ian and Barley (as voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, respectively), set off on a quest after the youngest one summons their father from the dead — but only his legs. They seek the magical item that will allow them to fully summon their father and spend one last day with him.
Onward is available tonight at 5:00 p.m PDT/8:00 p.m. EDT.
