Billie Eilish stepped away from her signature look by projecting a video during her concert Monday that showed her stripping down to her bra and making a statement about appearances. .
On the first stop of her North America tour, in Miami, the “Bad Guy” artist played the video on a screen between sets. It showed her unzipping her sweater and peeling off her tank top. The video was accompanied by Eilish’s voice addressing criticisms about her body and choice of baggy clothing.
“You have opinions about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body,” Eilish says in the video. “Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it, some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me, but I feel you watching, always, and nothing I do goes unseen.”
The 18-year-old’s monologue noted that if she reacted to all the criticism, she would “never be able to move.”
“Would you like me to be smaller? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Would you like me to be quiet?” she says. “Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach? My hips? The body I was born with, is it not what you wanted?”
Her interlude continues: “If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I’m a slut. Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it and judge me for it.”
The Grammy-winning artist is known for donning baggy clothes, a conscious fashion choice.
“I never want the world to know everything about me,” she said in an ad for Calvin Klein last year. “I mean, that’s why I wear big, baggy clothes. Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath, you know?”
She continued, “Nobody can be like, ‘Oh, she’s slim-thick, she’s not slim-thick, she’s got a flat (butt), she’s got a fat (butt).’ No one can say any of that, because they don’t know.”
