AS I WAITED to go through customs at Milan’s Malpensa airport, en route to the women’s fashion shows that kicked off Feb. 18, a man in a mask and surgical gloves flashed a light at my forehead with a thermometer gun to take my temperature digitally. Behind me, throngs of other sleepy, black-garbed fashion types were arriving for the shows. Like migrating birds in trench coats, twice a year they fly in from all around the world, rolling their hard-ridged Rimowa suitcases filled with carefully chosen outfits layered between sheets of tissue paper.
