Taylor Swift’s Netflix Documentary to Feature New Song “Only the Young” – Pitchfork

Taylor Swift will debut a new song called “Only the Young” in her forthcoming Netflix documentary Miss Americana, Variety reports. The song is played during the film’s credits, and will be released January 31 to coincide with its premiere on Netflix.

The film documents the process of writing the song, which she started after watching the candidates she had endorsed in the 2018 midterm elections (Democratic Senate candidate Phil Bredesen and Democratic Congressman Jim Cooper) lose. She told Variety, “It was hard to see so many people feel like they had canvassed and done everything and tried so hard. I saw a lot of young people’s hopes dashed.”

Until recently, Swift had remained politically neutral; the 2018 elections were her first foray into political speech. She has since written an open letter to Tennessee’s Republican Senator Lamar Alexander in support of the Equality Act, and dropped in for a surprise appearance at New York City’s famed LGBTQ bar the Stonewall Inn during NYC Pride 2019. When “You Need to Calm Down” won Video of the Year at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, she called out the White House for its lack of response to the Equality Act petition she had attached to the video.
