Family Movies Coming Out in 2020 – Chicago Parent

Grab the popcorn … 2020 has no shortage of family-friendly movies in store for us. From amazing remakes of classic movies to highly-anticipated sequels and film adaptations of best-selling books, here are the family-friendly flicks we’re most looking forward to this year.

January

Dolittle (Jan. 17)

Robert Downey Jr. stars as the man that can talk to animals — Dolittle — in this remake about an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure for Queen Victoria.

February

Sonic the Hedgehog (Feb. 14)

Based on the successful video game franchise by Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog follows a blue hedgehog who comes to Earth to escape those who want to harness the power of his super speed.

March

Onward (March 6)

In Disney and Pixar’s Onward, two teenage elf brothers embark on a quest to bring back their late Dad for 24 hours.

Mulan (March 27)

One of the most anticipated Disney non-animated remakes, Mulan tells the empowering tale of a young woman who disguises herself as a man to save her ailing father from fighting in the Imperial Army.

April

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (April 3)

Peter the mischievous rabbit is back, and this time in a world beyond the garden where he can be himself. Peter must find out what kind of rabbit he wants to be when his family risks their livelihood looking for him.

Trolls World Tour (April 17)

Poppy and Branch set out on an adventure to unite all of the tribes of musical trolls and save the diverse melodies from becoming extinct.

May

Scoob! (May 15)

The gang (Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne and Velma) reunites to face their biggest challenge yet: a plot to summon the ghost dog Cerberus.

The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run (May 22)

SpongeBob and Patrick go on a quest to The Lost City of Atlantic City to rescue SpongeBob’s pet snail, Gary, after he is kidnapped.

Artemis Fowl (May 29)

Nearly 20 years after the children’s book series of the same name, Disney is remaking the movie that follows the story of a 12-year-old genius and criminal mastermind who sets out to investigate his father’s disappearance.

June

Soul (June 19)

In Pixar’s big movie for 2020, Soul follows a musician who has lost his passion for music, as he is transported out of his body and must find his way back.

July

Minions 2: The Rise of Gru (July 3)

They’re back! While little information has been released on this movie, it is a sequel to the 2015 film, Minions, and a prequel to the main Despicable Me film series.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (July 10)

The next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, follows a family who discovers their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

The Jungle Cruise (July 24)

Based on the theme park ride at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Jungle Cruise, the movie takes riverboat travelers through a jungle filled with mysterious animals and reptiles.

August

The One and Only Ivan (Aug. 14)

Disney will animate an adaptation of Katherine Applegate’s award-winning children’s book that depicts the story of a gorilla and other animals who share a communal habitat at a suburban shopping mall.

September

The Mitchells vs. the Machines (Sept. 18)

The Mitchell family road trip is interrupted when a tech uprising threatens to take over the world.

October

The Witches (Oct. 9)

Based on Roald Dahl’s book of the same name, The Witches, starring Anne Hathaway, tells the story of a little boy who becomes entangled with real-life witches.

Clifford the Big Red Dog (Oct. 13)

Another book series translated into film, Clifford the Big Red Dog stars a 25-foot tall red dog and his young owner, Emily.

November

Raya and the Last Dragon (Nov. 25)

Another Disney movie, a warrior named Raya must find search the land of Kumandra to find the last remaining dragon in the world.

December

Tom and Jerry (Dec. 23)

A live-action movie based on the Tom and Jerry cartoon, the movie centers on the pair as they take up residency in a fancy hotel.

The Croods 2 (Dec. 23)

Join this prehistoric family on an all-new adventure as they are challenged by a rival family.
