A large part of Disney+’s appeal is the range it offers. On Disney+, viewers can watch some of the most well-known films from Marvel like Avengers: Endgame, animated masterpieces such as The Jungle Book, or recent hits like Frozen. While these films have reputations as some of the best movies owned by Disney, here are the most underrated movies that can be found on the platform.
10 Things I Hate About You
Starring Heath Ledger Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 10 Things I Hate About You is a romantic comedy that takes Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew – which is set in the 16th century – and brings it to an American high school in the late 1990s. The 1999 movie has become a much-loved cult classic as a teen romance, which is helped by its superb cast and their performances, and a sharp script that elevates above being just another teen movie.
Journey To The Center Of The Earth
Jules Verne’s 1864 novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth, has been adapted to the big screen multiple times, but none can surpass Hollywood’s first attempt to bring Verne’s story to life. Released in 1959, 20th Century Fox’s Journey to the Center of the Earth was released amidst a wave of low budget science fiction movies, but this particular film stands out as a movie with special effects that were ahead of its time and an A-list cast led by the versatile and extremely talented James Mason.
Fantasia 2000
The 1940 film, Fantasia, is widely considered to be a musical masterpiece. In 1999, Disney released a sequel, Fantasia 2000. Like the original, Fantasia 2000 blends music with imagery with fantastic sequences of animation set to a backdrop of orchestra music. Each sequence is unique and different from the one that preceded it, allowing Fantasia 2000 to serve as a compelling viewing experience that should live up to the expectations of fans of the first movie.

Big Hero 6
With all of the animated films that Disney has produced in recent years, Big Hero 6 is by far the most underrated. Big Hero 6 told the story of a friendship between a young boy and an inflatable robot named Baymax. The two become superheroes and meet a colorful cast of characters who take part in their story. Big Hero 6, which garnered significant praise from critics, and received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it’s now often overlooked among Disney’s other movies, despite its stunning animation and excellent action.
One Hundred And One Dalmations
Considering the sheer number of beloved animated classics Disney has in its library, it’s easy to overlook 101 Dalmations. The 1961 movie shows what happens when an enormous litter of Dalmation puppies are kidnapped by the sinister Cruella de Ville, a villainess who plots to make fur coats out of them. At the time of its release, it was described by critics as one of Disney’s best, as it perfectly captured the essence of a Disney flick, and while Disney has made better movies since, a lot of still holds true today.
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
The 1971 Disney musical Bedknobs and Broomsticks stars Angela Lansbury as Miss Price, a middle-aged woman who secretly practices witchcraft. The movie kicks off with three children being placed in the care of Miss Price, who introduced them to a world of fantasy and magic. The movie, which bears some striking similarities to the more popular Marry Poppins, features a fun combination of live-action, animation, and several musical numbers.
The Rocketeer
Before the superhero craze in the 2000s, there was The Rocketeer. Directed by Joe Johnston, the film starred Billy Campbell as Cliff Secord, a pilot who finds a jet pack in 1938 Los Angeles. As the Rocketeer, Secord ends up in a conflict that involves the Nazis and the FBI. The film didn’t break box office records, but has enjoyed cult status as an outstanding period superhero film.

A Goofy Movie
In 1995, iconic Disney character Goofy received his own movie, which was simply titled, A Goofy Movie. Based on the TV series Goof Troop, A Goofy Movie is a fun, father-and-son story about Goofy doing his very best to take his son Max on a fishing trip that was doomed to fail due to Goofy’s antics, which unintentionally humiliate Max on numerous occasions throughout the film. While the movie may not be well-known to wider audiences, it likely needs no introduction for those who grew up in the 1990s, as the film was deeply loved by children for its heartwarming story and hilarious moments.
The Fox And The Hound
1981’s The Fox and the Hound has a review score of 70% on Rotten Tomatoes, which feels like a poor reflection of what the movie represents to audiences who have wept at its heartbreaking story of an unlikely friendship between a fox and hunting dog. The two animals were destined to be enemies, but at least one of them refuses to give up on their friendship – no matter what.
Thor
It’s often said that Thor: Ragnarok, the film that revitalized the trilogy, is the best of the three Thor films, but many seem to ignore or forget what Chris Hemsworth’s first outing as the God of Thunder brought to the MCU. The titular protagonist in 2011’s Thor is an immensely powerful and confident warrior whose ego turns his life upside down when he is cast out by his own father and stripped of his powers. A love story with Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, Thor’s journey to become the man he needs to be to regain his power, and a perfect dose of comedy at all the right moments makes Thor one of the MCU’s most underrated films, and now one of Disney+‘s too.
