Breeders’ Cup Buzz Presented By TVG: Your First Breeders’ Cup – Horse Racing News – Paulick Report
Every Breeders’ Cup is the first one for some portion of the crowd in attendance, and some of the people in that group this weekend at Santa Anita Park will one day go on to become participants in the event themselves.
In Breeders’ Cup Buzz all this week, we’ll speak to some notable names in the Thoroughbred industry who have their sights on the Breeders’ Cup and ask them about their experiences with the event and a few hypothetical questions tied to the races.
This edition’s question digs into the past, asking its subjects about the first Breeders’ Cup they attended in person, and what the experience was like.
Jamie Roth, LNJ Foxwoods
“That would have been the Keeneland one [in 2015] when Nickname ran in the Juvenile Fillies and Super Majesty ran in the Filly and Mare Sprint.
“I was so naïve then. I had just gotten in the game and I don’t think I really quite grasped how much of an achievement it is just to be at the Breeders’ Cup, and now looking back and realizing this is now the fourth straight year to have a horse in the Breeders’ Cup. I know how hard it is to get to the races and get to this point. It’s incredible. I wish I could go back and taken more of it in, and just realized how cool an experience it was, but Keeneland did an amazing job. I can’t wait for them to have it again.”
Brendan Walsh, Trainer
“My first year at a Breeders’ Cup was at Belmont in 2005, the year Saint Liam won the Classic. It was fantastic, but a disaster because every horse I bet on got beat. Ouija Board got beat in the Filly and Mare Turf, and John Oxx brought a horse for the Aga Khan for the Turf, Azamour, and even he got beat. It was just a disaster from a European betting point, but it was very enjoyable.
“We’d watched numerous Breeders’ Cups from home, because that’s what American racing was associated with, even more than with the Derby, so it was fantastic to actually get to one.”
Jack Sisterson, Trainer
“I think it was when Zenyatta won the Breeders’ Cup Classic on the Polytrack [2009 at Santa Anita]. It was brilliant. I was standing on the apron amongst thousands of people, and there was programs getting thrown up in the air. It was electrifying there.”
Samantha Siegel, Jay Em Ess Stable
“The first one at Hollywood Park [in 1984]. It was a zoo. Celebrities and racing fans everywhere.”
Erik Johnson, ERJ Racing, Colorado Avalanche
“I’ve never been! I have always had games or practice during the Breeders’ Cup. This year is really bad schedule-wise. We play Friday and Saturday and I’ll have two running each day.”
