Jameela Jamil, Sara Sampaio launch a war of tweets over body image, fashion and modeling – USA TODAY

A war of words has ignited between Jameela Jamil of “The Good Place” and Victoria’s Secret model Sara Sampaio.

The two began clashing about the fashion industry on Twitter Tuesday, with Jamil slamming its treatment of women while Sampaio defended her fellow models.

It all began when Jamil retweeted a video of women smiling and dancing on a catwalk Saturday.

“Oh my god,” she wrote, “this looks like the most fun, and not a long-starved terrified teenager in sight. Beautiful.”

On Tuesday, Sampaio jumped in, taking issue with Jamil’s characterization of models.

“How about celebrating someone without bringing other people down?” she tweeted. “Calling runway models ‘long-starved terrified teenager’ is extremely offensive. From someone that is always preaching for body positivity this just screams hypocrisy.”

Jamil fired back that the fashion industry has “a *vast* majority issue with young girls starving themselves, and using drugs and cocaine to control their weight, to meet the very small sample sizes.” The actress also argued “eating disorder culture,” is “in NO small way perpetuated by the extreme thinness demanded of girls by the high fashion powers that be.”

In response, Sampaio unleashed a three-tweet thread where she said Jamil “still chose to attack girls.” She also wrote the issues raised by Jamil are not an “exclusive problem of models” but a “huge problem” for “society as a whole.”

“And about modeling I can for sure talk with more certainty than you,” Sampaio continued.

The two exchanged several back-and-forth tweets, hurling harsh words at each other between their points. While Jamil argued her comment was directed at the fashion industry in general, Sampaio accused her of bringing down some women in order to raise up others.

As the conversation ran its course, Sampaio said it didn’t seem like they were on the same page.

“With all due respect right now it just feels like I’m talking about apples and your talking about pears!” she wrote. “I think I’ve been very clear in what I meant.”

A few more heated tweets later, their beef seemed to have died down.

But Jamil continued the argument Wednesday, posting a link to a news article about their spat.

Jamil said it was “ridiculous” their fight made headlines and tagged Sampaio in a tweet where she accused the model of missing her point. Rather than “taking aim at kids,” Jamil said her target was “this (unbelievably (expletive)) industry.”

After a few more heated back-and-forths, Sampaio said she was done responding.

“This is the last I’ll say on this,” she wrote. “Your constant condescending tone is just unnecessary, and makes it impossible to actual have a conversation. Hope you have a nice life. Wish you all the best.”
