Two Kimberly restaurants aim to reeducate Fox Cities’ residents about Mexico’s equivalent to the Fourth of July.
“Everybody thinks Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican Independence Day, but it’s not. We wanted to be the first to celebrate Mexico’s actual independence Day,” said Jennifer Morales, co-owner of Mr. Taco and Savor with husband Luis Morales. “It’s our first Mexican Independence Day Block Party.”
On Sunday, the two restaurants will cordon off their joint parking lot at 700 Schelfhout Lane in Kimberly and hold a party from noon to 8 p.m.
The true Mexican Independence Day is actually Sept. 16, which this year falls on Monday. It commemorates the start of Mexico’s revolt against Spain in 1810.
Sunday’s celebration will have DJs and live music, including a mariachi band and Lawrence University’s Salsa Manzana. See the schedule on Mr. Taco Kimberly’s Facebook page. It will have giveaways, children’s entertainment and food for purchase.
“And of course tequila,” Morales said. Those over 21 can get wristbands that will allow them to make drink purchases.
