If there’s one thing we love to see at the multiplex — over, and over, and over again — it’s a good superhero story. Superhero anticipation crested and came to a head with the release of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of an impressive franchise that spanned more than 20 films. But, now that the Avengers are over (for now), does that mean that the superhero film is going to go the way of the Western? Comics fans have no need to fear, because there are still plenty of superhero films currently in the pipeline (with plenty more available on TV, especially with the launch of the Disney+ streaming service, which will host a slew of new Marvel series).
Here are the upcoming superhero movies that have been announced already. The plots of many are still shrouded in secrecy, but there are plenty of returning favorite heroes — and villains — from both Marvel (Thor, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Black Panther) and DC (Batman, the Joker, Harley Quinn). Plus, there are a few new names in the mix, including an X-Men spinoff and Marvel’s first Asian hero. And you don’t have to wait very long, either: The first of these comes out October 2019, and it’s a doozy.

Birds of Prey
Release Date: October 4, 2019
The full title of this movie is& Bird of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Here, Quinn, played again by Margot Robbie, leads an all-female team of supers: Rosie Perez plays The Question, Jurnee Smollett-Bell plays Black Canary, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Huntress.

The New Mutants
Release Date: April 3, 2020
The New Mutants live in the same universe as the X-Men, only with nary a Magneto or Professor X in sight. According to Deadline, this is a younger, darker, more horror-driven X-Men story. Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, and Charlie Heaton star.

Black Widow
Wonder Woman 1984
Release Date: May 1, 2020
Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman returns, this time in the decade of day-glo and the Cold War. Kristen Wiig will be her foil, playing the villain Cheetah. Chris Pine is also set to return, which makes our hearts flutter a little.
Morbius
Release Date: July 31, 2020
The release date for this movie hasn’t been confirmed or officially announced, but the anticipation is high to see Jared Leto take on the title role in this Spider-Man spin-off. Leto will play Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who, through an experiment gone bad, basically becomes a vampire (and definitely drinks blood).
Eternals
Release Date: November 6, 2020
This film, about a group of nearly immortal, godlike beings, features a stacked cast — anchored by none other than Angelina Jolie. Her castmates include Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, Kumail Nanjiani, Gemma Chan, and Brian Tyree Henry.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Release Date: February 12, 2021
Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and& Tony Leung star in this superhero film — Marvel’s first to star an Asian lead (Liu). Leung plays the villain The Mandarin, which sounds familiar to Iron Man fans, but is, in fact, bears no relation to Ben Kingsley’s take on the character.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Release Date: May 7, 2021
Doctor Strange didn’t get too much time in Endgame, but you’ll have to wait until 2021 for your next Sorcerer Supreme fix. Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, will also join him in a film that’s supposedly more like a horror flick than the other MCU films.
The Batman
Release Date: June 25, 2021
Now that Ben Affleck has hung up his cowl, Robert Pattinson is taking up the mantel of Batman in a caper directed by Matt Reeves who directed the last two Planet of the Apes movies.
The Suicide Squad
Release Date: August 6, 2021
Oh, hey, it’s Harley Quinn again! This time, she’s re-teamed with her old baddies from Suicide Squad, and is heading out on another adventure. This time, the director is James Gunn, who previously did the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Bonus: Idris Elba is joining the cast, playing a character that’s new for the film.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Release Date: November 5, 2021
Natalie Portman’s Jane is set to become a female god of thunder in this Thor follow-up, Variety reports. But, don’t worry, Thor and Valkyrie will be returning, too, as will director Taika Waititi.
Black Panther II
Release Date: May 6, 2022
Director Ryan Coogler will return to direct in the next film about King T’Challa of Wakanda. But, after the events of Infinity War and Endgame, you’ll better believe that the country is a changed place, and so is its King.
Aquaman 2
Release Date: December 16, 2022
Fans of seeing a wet, shirtless Jason Momoa, rejoice! Aquaman will return to the briny depths, and just in time for Christmas, too. Other than that, not much is known.
