Many critics are calling 2019 the worst summer on record for Hollywood movies. It certainly started out with a bombshell — Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing movie ever — but it seems to be going out with a whisper, followed by nothing but flops since then.
As August draws to a close, let’s take a look at the worst five films of the summer of 2019.
‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’: A monstrous failure
The general consensus of viewers is that Godzilla: King of Monsters has an awful plot coupled with terrible acting, which not even the best special effects could save. Spoiler alert: The CGI is completely horrendous as well, so the monsters do not make up for the writing. The critics on Rotten Tomatoes give the movie a 41% rating, while IMDb is slightly higher with a 6.2 rating out of 10.
In any Godzilla movie, we expect the writing to be a bit sub-par because we are truly watching it for the life-size monsters. The problem with this particular film is that there are many blinding lights, blurred scenes, as well as a shaky camera angles so we don’t even get the chance to indulge in the cutting-edge effects we were looking for. It’s actually hard to watch. In fact, we recommend not watching it at all.
‘Shaft’: Third time is not a charm
The new Shaft is actually the third in a series of five films that are, once again, simply titled Shaft. The mere fact that it is a remake of a remake should be enough to warn anyone against watching it. Samuel L. Jackson seems to be the only reason viewers like the movie at all.
Rotten Tomatoes gives this one a 32% rating, while IMDb finds this film only slightly better than Godzilla: King of Monsters, with a rating of 6.4 out of 10.
Critics report that where the movie is trying to be funny, it’s more offensive than anything else. The action scenes lack excitement and the plot is simply forgettable. This one is also not worth your time.
‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’: Far from the best movie of the series
In the history of X-Men movies, the critics and audience both claim the Dark Phoenix to be the absolute worst of the bunch. The film attempts to tell the story of Jean Grey, but many viewers found that Sophie Turner does not do the character justice.
The critics’ consensus from Rotten Tomatoes gives a 23% rating; while users on IMDb give an overall rating of a 6.0 out of 10.
The New York Times review sums up what most viewers have agreed upon, “The role is an unfortunately bad fit for Turner, who receives no help from (Simon) Kinberg. She looks comfy in midair, but can’t fill in the character with the necessary nuances and mood changes.”
If you love X-Men movies, we recommend rewatching any of the others in order to avoid watching this one.
‘Men In Black: International’: Grab your neuralyzer to erase your memory of this one
Just because two actors perform remarkably in one movie, does not mean they will have the same results in another. After watching Thor: Ragnorak, viewers were psyched to see that Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth were again paired up as leads in Men In Black: International.
The duo, who are called Agents H and M, — much like the clothing brand — do not have the same connection as they did in their former movie. The writing is bland and all we are left with are two famous actors to look at.
Men In Black: International earns a 22% rating on the Tomatometer and a 5.6 by users on IMDb. It’s a far cry from Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’s original hit that we all know and love.
‘The Hustle’: Will leave you feeling conned
In The Hustle, we find that we have yet another remake of a remake that just doesn’t quite work. The Hustle scores only 14% on the Tomatometer and 5.3 on IMDb making it the most awful film to hit Hollywood this summer.
The film is a remake of the 1988 comedy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, except with a gender swap. Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as the con-artists who continually try to one-up each other. Instead of a steadily building thrill, critics describe the cons as more random and incohesive.
A review from the Los Angeles Times says, “It’s the irony of all ironies that one walks away from The Hustle feeling a little, well, hustled.”
Overall, if you avoid any movies this season, these five are at the top of the do not watch list.
