Stan is a small part of an absolutely stacked cast in Logan Lucky. And when we say absolutely stacked, we mean absolutely stacked: he joins Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Seth MacFarlane, Riley Keough, Katie Holmes, and Hillary Swank. This movie plays sort of like a blue collar Ocean’s 11—it’s a heist movie set at a race track, after all—which makes sense, considering its director, Steven Soderbergh, also helmed that movie as well.

In this story based on the too-wild-to-be-fiction story of Tonya Harding (played in an Academy Award-nominated turn by Margot Robbie), Stan plays her scheming husband Jeff Gilooly. It’s wildly different from anything else he’s done; if this was his first movie you ever saw, you’d never in a million years suspect his Captain America history. Part Fargo, part Catch Me If You Can, this movie is a really well-done take on a story that most people don’t know completely.

Stan was so excited about his experience on I, Tonya that it actually inspired him to star looking for roles in more independent films. The result was his appearance in Destroyer, where he plays the ex-boyfriend of Nicole Kidman’s character, both having previously infiltrated a violent and dangerous gang. This drama issuper intense, and both leads give really strong performances; it opens with a murder, and the movie works backwards to figure everything out. And, uh, do you see Sebastian Stan in this picture? That’s a new look, huh?

There’s a 99% chance you’ve already heard of this one, and probably a 97% chance that you’ve already seen it. Doesn’t matter, because this movie is that great: arguably director Ridley Scott’s late-career masterpiece, The Martian finds NASA desperately trying to save an astronaut played by Matt Damon, who winds up stuck fending for himself on Mars. Stan, playing a scientist/astronaut, is part of a team that includes an absolute wrecking crew of A-list talent: Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Kristen Wiig are just a few of the names we’re talking here.

Outside of the other pre-Winter Soldier selection on this list (stay tuned for that one), this is actually a great turn in a really funny movie. Stan plays Blaine, the jerk ski instructor that the main characters (John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke) find in the ’80s when the travel back in time in the…well, in the Hot Tub Time Machine.

Additionally, this movie introduces a vast MCU quandry; you may recall that War Machine made reference to Hot Tub Time Machine in Avengers: Endgame. If Hot Tub Time Machine exists in that world, does that mean that War Machine is just familiar with a movie that has a jerk ski instructor named Blaine who looks awfully like Captain America’s buddy? The world may never know.

Heard of this movie? Probably not! Well, it features Sebastian Stan among some acting royalty: his parents are played by Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline, and his sister is played by Streep’s daughter, Mamie Gummer. This movie was written by Diablo Cody (Juno), so you know it’s going to have a little bit of an edge, but mostly you’re just checking this one out to see a little bit of rock and roll movie, a little bit of family movie, and some solid acting.

This screwball comedy depicts a version of the Olympics that movies don’t often get to: what happens after your prime. Melissa Rauch is the main character, a former Bronze medalist living in a small Ohio town off her past celebrity, while Stan plays her Gold medalist counterpart. This movie goes moderately off the rails, and is an interesting watch for anyone who might enjoy off-kilter sports movies like Blades of Glory or even the aforementioned I, Tonya.

We should be up front here: this is definitively not a good movie. In fact, this tale of teens with powers due to some sort of ancient magic family thing is totally outrageous, and Stan, as the power-hungry villain (for no real reason) is super hammy and bears no resemblance to the subtle actor that we’ve seen over the years in movies like The Martian and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Again, this is not a good movie. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fun.
