Hours away from MTV’s Video Music Awards, the network announced that singer Miley Cyrus would be taking the stage to perform her new single “Slide Away” for the very first time at the ceremony. Many fans are speculating that the song is about her split from Liam Hemsworth.
The couple announced their separation after eight months of marriage and several years of tumultuous on-again-off-again dating. Cyrus released the audio of “Slide Away” on her official YouTube channel less than a week after her separation from Hemsworth was announced. Days later, Hemsworth filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. This performance will be Cyrus’ first public appearance since the news came out that she was in the process of divorcing her husband, Hemsworth, earlier this month.
Cyrus’ performance was a surprise for fans
Miley Cyrus’ performance at the Video Music Awards came at somewhat of a surprise to fans, as she had previously said she would not be performing at the show. After Cyrus didn’t receive any nominations, a fan account made a post on Instagram saying, “Guess I’m not watching the VMAs this year…unless Miley performs.” Cyrus commented on the post saying, “No f**kin way.”
A different fan account made another post saying, “They care more about a f**king green screen than a message to the world. nominate anyone but at least do not use the image of Miley to promote their damn prizes @vmas and #SheIsComing #Peace.” Cyrus commented “Exactly.”
Despite these comments, Cyrus will now officially be performing alongside The Jonas Brothers, Camila Cabello, Lizzo, and more.
Miley Cyrus never intended to hurt Hemsworth
After engaging in some pretty wild antics, like publicly hooking up with Brody Jenner’s ex Kaitlynn Carter, Cyrus stated that “she never wanted to hurt Liam.” The separation from Liam Hemsworth came as a shock to Cyrus. She had hoped that the two would work through their problems and stay together.
“They had many happy days together in Los Angeles and now Liam is not around,” an anonymous source informed People, “It’s hard for her to be back in LA without him. This is not the situation that she wanted. She hoped they could figure things out.”
Rumors about Cyrus cheating on Hemsworth began to circulate, but Cyrus denied these allegations publicly on Twitter. “I can accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent with my fans who I love, and the public, 100% of the time. What I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed. I have nothing to hide,” said Cyrus at the beginning of a lengthy thread of posts.
