Aspirus program focuses on healthy lifestyle changes – WAOW

WAUSAU (WAOW) — Obesity rates across the county have double since the 90’s and Wisconsin’s rate is higher than the national average with 32% of the adult population struggling with obesity.

An exercise physiologist at Aspirus says lifestyle changes are the best to get, and stay, healthy. ADAPT is a program Aspirus offers that teaches patients about healthy eating and exercise.

“What we’re trying to do is help people make lifestyle modifications and basically adapt their lifestyle and keep these changes for the rest of their life,” said exercise physiologist Tammy Smith.

She encourages people in the ADAPT program to set realistic goals they can stick with. When it comes to exercise she said not to push too hard too fast, and encourages a Mediterranean diet of lots of fruits and veggies, lean protein and low-fat dairy products.
