Markle and Harry are royals, not private citizens

From Archie’s private christening and keeping his godparents a secret to Markle demanding no photos be taken of her at Wimbledon to opting for a private jet after lecturing others about climate change, the couple’s recent behavior is raising eyebrows.

The duke and duchess’ demands for privacy after they accepted taxpayer dollars to renovate their new home has also rubbed people the wrong way. Several royal experts weighed in and reminded Harry and Markle that they are royals, not private citizens.

This morning, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was christened in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle at an intimate service officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment. Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie. Their son, Archie, was baptised wearing the handmade replica of the royal christening gown which has been worn by royal infants for the last 11 years. The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 and first worn by her eldest daughter. It was subsequently worn for generations of Royal christenings, including The Queen, her children and her grandchildren until 2004, when The Queen commissioned this handmade replica, in order for the fragile historic outfit to be preserved, and for the tradition to continue. “You cannot be royal and be sixth in line to the throne and be a private person,” Majesty magazine editor Ingrid Seward stated.

“They can’t have it both ways. Either they are totally private, pay for their own house and disappear out of view, or play the game the way it is played,” said royal biographer Penny Junor.

And Labour Member of Parliament Luke Pollard told CNN, “When you’re still taking millions of pounds worth of public money — money that could be spent in schools and hospitals — to upgrade and refurbish what is, you know, luxury palaces, you’ve got to ask yourself: what are the public getting in return? I think this is a chance to look at: Is the behavior of the royal family the right way forward?”

Backlash from the public

The prince and former actress’ behavior has even led to some bashing of the once very popular royal.

“People aren’t stupid, come on Harry. He’s got detached from where he came from. He was a people’s prince, he’s now become some hypocritical, preachy, detached slightly confused young prince and he’ll lose his popularity,” commentator Duncan Larcombe said on Yahoo’s Royal Box.

Is Prince William fed up with their antics?

All this outrage reportedly has Prince William concerned for how the family will be viewed in the future. It’s been reported that the second in line to the throne is annoyed at his brother and Markle’s antics and feels that can be damaging to the future of the monarchy.

Because the royal family receives funding and support from the public it’s important that their reputation doesn’t take too much of a hit and turn everyone off. That’s why some believe the Duke of Cambridge is “bothered” by the way the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been acting.

“I would think it might bother William a bit because he might see the way that Harry and Meghan do things as being detrimental to the business of the monarchy as a whole,” Seward said.
