Reader question: Didn’t see any report regarding the storm damage to the greenhouse at Twigs & Vines Floral on Richmond Street. Wondering what kind of impact this will have on them as a smaller independent?

Answer: Twigs & Vines Floral, 3100 N. Richmond St., is open and operating normally in its day-to-day business of selling flowers for weddings, funerals and general delivery or pick-up.

The damage from the July 20 storm was confined to the greenhouse.

“The straight winds came right through the cemetery,” said owner Judy Corrigan. “The whole greenhouse blew down and can’t be fixed.

“It doesn’t really affect my business because we weren’t using the greenhouse at the time. We only use it in the spring. No one was in the greenhouse at the time and nobody got hurt. There was no growing product in the greenhouse.”

If the storm had happened in May or June, it could have been a different story, she said.

The damage is covered by insurance, and she said she hasn’t tallied the final dollar figure.

“I’m going to take the greenhouse down and do an addition on that end for more shopping room. I’ll do a seasonal hoop house for plants,” she said.

“It will be good. Sometimes when a disaster happens, it gives you a chance to reevaluate your business and make some changes. We’re growing so much, so I need more room for plants and coolers.”

Corrigan said her retail business has quadrupled since she bought the place in 2012.

She hopes to complete the building addition before Christmas.
