Welcome to New York, Katy Keene! The first full trailer for the CW’s new Riverdale spinoff has officially arrived, and Katy and friends are ready to make a name for themselves in the big city and fulfill their dreams … or are they?
“My mom was Katherine Keene. She was a seamstress,” says Katy (played by Lucy Hale), via voiceover, in the opening scenes of the trailer. “I was named after her. She always used to say, ‘You don’t have to be rich to be stylish.’ We would get inspired by our favorite designers and then make our own.”
We then see child Katy with her mom admiring a store window and adult Katy busily working over her sewing machine as her boyfriend, a boxer named K.O. Kelly, looks on. We follow Katy as she hits the streets of NYC in a flashy red cape and matching heels to apply for a job as a personal shopper at a very fancy department store called Lacy’s — one Katy has dreamed of working at all her life.
Oh, and did we mention that Katy’s pal Josie McCoy has moved to town? Ashleigh Murray, who got her start on Riverdale,, will now play Josie, a few years in the future, on Katy Keene. Josie’s trying to make it as a musician, and from what we’ve seen of her talents on Riverdale, we’ve got a feeling she’s going to make those dreams come true.
That doesn’t mean that life in New York is all sunshine, glamour, and romance for Katy and her friends. The trailer reveals that the road to success isn’t easy for any of the crew; we see Katy, Josie, and their friend Jorge, a Broadway hopeful, experiencing setbacks on their journey to fame. However, with a little help from your friends, you can do anything — and Katy and her crew seem to have that (almost) figured out. “This is the greatest time of our lives,” voiceover Katy says, and from the trailer, it sure looks like it.
Katy Keene will reportedly premiere in 2020, likely around midseason/early in the year. Until then, we’ll be dissecting the trailer and trying to figure out which Katy Keene character is our fave.
