Il Angolo, a high-end restaurant at 527-529 W. College Ave. in downtown Appleton, closed June 29.
Co-owner Conrado Lopez said he closed because his brother Oscar was leaving the business.
“My brother wanted to do something different. It was too hard to find a different chef. Without him, Il Angolo isn’t Il Angolo. He was the main part of the business with his food.”
Conrado Lopez said he will continue to operate the C-Vine Lounge next door at 531 W. College Ave.
He said he’ll reimburse gift cards.
“They can send them to 531 W. College Ave. with a receipt and we will send a check with the response,” he said.
They no longer have the machine to read gift card balances, so that’s why a receipt must also be enclosed. Keep copies of any materials sent to the business.
Il Angolo’s abrupt closure was a surprise to building owner Frank Schadt.
“He closed the last Saturday of June. Two days prior to that I found out,” Schadt said on Monday. “Today he dropped off the keys. The rent was paid and he paid extra for the early exit from his lease. He’s been a good tenant. He said, ‘my brother didn’t want to do it anymore and I can’t do it by myself.’”
The brothers operated Il Angolo on Appleton Street for 12 years, and moved to College Avenue in March 2018. The Appleton Street building they left later became Author’s Kitchen & Bar, which burned down this March.

Schadt said he’ll look for a new tenant for the Il Angolo space on College Avenue. He applied for a liquor license so that one would be available to be transferred to a future tenant.
