All the Celebrities Defending Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun – ELLE.com
Taylor Swift posted a letter to Tumblr on Sunday explaining why she was “sad and grossed out” that Scooter Braun would be acquiring Big Machine Label Group, Swift’s original label, and therefore would be gaining the rights to Swift’s first six albums.
She wrote, “I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.” Swift attached an old Instagram photo from Justin Bieber to the post where he appears on FaceTime with Braun and Kanye West; Bieber captioned the photo with “Taylor Swift what up.” (This all occurred shortly after the feud between Swift, West, and Kim Kardashian. At the time, Braun was both West’s and Bieber’s manager.)
Swift wrote that “Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy” and claimed that Scott Borchetta, the founder of Big Machine Label Group, knew of Swift’s disdain toward Braun. (Read the whole letter here.)
Since Swift’s post, a number of celebrities have come forward to take sides, either defending Swift or Braun. Ahead, a deep dive into everyone who has spoken out so far.
Team Taylor
Halsey
Halsey defended Swift on her Instagram, writing, “She deserves to own the painstaking labor of her heart.” She continued, “And it turns my gut that no matter how much power or success a woman has in this life, you are still susceptible to someone coming along and making you feel powerless out of spite.”
Danielle Haim
Danielle Haim, longtime friend of Swift’s, posted part of Swift’s letter to her Instagram story and wrote, “sometimes I’m reminded how fucked up and slimy this business is. this is one of those times – LET @taylorswift BUY BACK HER MUSIC YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES !!”

Iggy Azalea
Iggy Azalea defended Swift on Twitter, writing, “Telling someone about a deal days before it’s public means the deal was already done & she never had the opportunity to even make a bid to own her own work. These deals take months to negotiate in long form.” She’s referencing the that said Swift found out about the deal between Big Machine and Braun on June 25th.
Heidi Montag
Heidi Montag also stood up for Swift on Twitter, writing, “It’s important to stand up for yourself, what is right, and true!”
Martha Hunt
Martha Hunt, another one of Swift’s longtime friends, wrote on Twitter, “Taylor doesn’t deserve for someone who has constantly BULLIED her to OWN THE RIGHTS to her blood, sweat, + tears. It’s not the dark ages – artists shouldn’t be held down, and I couldn’t be prouder of my friend for standing up for what’s right. End of story.”
Todrick Hall
Todrick Hall, one of Swift’s BFFs and the co-executive producer on her “You Need to Calm Down” music video, explained that while he used to be managed by Braun, he had left “a long time ago.”
After Hall posted his original comments, he also got into a public dispute with Allison Scarinzi, who is reported to be a manager at Braun’s company. Hall also responded to Demi Lovato with a Twitter thread, after she commented on his Instagram, saying she didn’t believe Braun to be homophobic. She since deleted the comment:
Katy Perry
Katy Perry, who recently confirmed her friendship with Swift in her “You Need to Calm Down” music video, commented on a petition titled “Make Taylor Swift re-release her 6 albums.” Perry wrote, “I stand with Taylor. Stay strong my friend.”
Brendon Urie
While streaming live on Twitch, Brendon Urie, who’s featured on Swift’s recent single “ME!”, defended Swift and calling Braun a “piece of shit.”
Team Scooter
Justin Bieber
Bieber, who was first discovered by Braun, vehemently defended him on Instagram. He wrote, “Scooter has had your back since the days you graciously let me open up for you.!” Bieber also wrote that it wasn’t fair of Swift to take this all to social media and “get people to hate on” Braun. He ended his caption with: “I’m sure Scooter and i would love to talk to you and resolve any conflict, pain or or any feelings that need to be addressed. Neither scooter or i have anything negative to say about you we truly want the best for you. I usually don’t rebuttal things like this but when you try and deface someone i loves character thats crossing a line..”
Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato, who recently signed with Braun, went onto her Instagram Story to defend her new manager. She wrote, “I have dealt with bad people in this industry and Scooter is not one of them. He’s a good man. Personally, I’m grateful that he came into my life when he did. Please stop ‘dragging’ people or bullying them. There’s enough hate in this world as it is. Y’all can come after me all you want but I’m always gonna stay loyal to my team. I value loyalty more than most people in this world and if my name is gonna be brought into conversations I’m gonna stand up for myself and the ones on my team.”

Yael Cohen Braun
While Braun himself has not responded to Swift’s letter, Braun’s wife, Yael Cohen Braun, has. She wrote her own letter on Instagram, saying, “I have never been one for a public airing of laundry, but when you attack my husband…here we go.” In her lengthy post, she also wrote, “You are supposed to be a role model but continue to model bullying.”
Also worth mentioning that Kendall Jenner, Kacey Musgraves, Demi Lovato, and Jenna Dewan all liked her post.
Erik Logan
Erik Logan, the former president of the Oprah Winfrey Network and a board member of Big Machine, wrote a scathing letter to Swift on Twitter that he has since deleted. In the message, he said, “For someone who draws such power from being the ‘voice’ and against all the things you talk about, I’m watching you violate what you allegedly stand for. You’re the real bully.”
Scott Borchetta
Scott Borchetta, who first signed Swift to Big Machine when she was just a teenager, responded to Swift’s letter with one of his own. In the letter, he explains that he told Swift about the news the night before it was publicly announced. He also claims that in Big Machine’s last official offer to Swift, all of her assets would have been signed over to her—if she signed another 10-year contract. Borchetta included screenshots of the deal and also contradicted Swift’s characterization of her relationship with Braun.
He wrote, “As to her comments about ‘being in tears or close to it’ anytime my new partner Scooter Braun’s name was brought up, I certainly never experienced that.” He continued, “Scooter was never anything but positive about Taylor. He called me directly about Manchester to see if Taylor would participate (she declined). He called me directly to see if Taylor wanted to participate in the Parkland March (she declined). Scooter has always been and will continue to be a supporter and honest custodian for Taylor and her music.”
Ariana Grande
Besides Bieber, Braun also represents Ariana Grande, who has yet to comment publicly. A source told Variety that “she’s frustrated by the whole thing.” The source went on to suggest that Grande wants to speak out, but Braun “is encouraging all of his acts to stay out of it.”
In Borchetta’s Tumblr post, he noted that Swift declined to perform in Grande’s Manchester benefit concert, which Grande held after the terrorist bombing at her show in Manchester, England.
Selena Gomez
Swift’s best friend (and ex-girlfriend to Justin Bieber) also has yet to comment publicly. However, her mom did post about the drama on Instagram. She wrote, “To deny you the option to own your blood, sweat and tears, especially as a young women who shared growing up in front of the world, is heartbreaking!!”
Karlie Kloss
Karlie Kloss and Swift used to be best friends (remember that joint Vogue cover?), though the two haven’t been spotted together much as of recently. However, Kloss has continued to say the two are friends.
Kloss also had a celebrity-filled wedding party earlier this summer. Swift was not spotted at the gathering, but guess who was? Braun and his wife.
Notably, Braun is a producer on Project Runway, which Kloss has hosted this past season.
This will continue to be updated.
