Just because Meghan Markle’s part of the British royal family, and officially has been for more than a year now, doesn’t mean she’s actually friends with her brother-in-law, second in line to the throne, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. Ahead, we explore whether or not the two are friends.
Are Meghan Markle and Prince William friends?
It’s easy to forget the royal family are people too. At the end of the day, Markle is not only the Duchess of Sussex but a sister-in-law too. Family dynamics play a huge role in any family even if they are British royalty.
While we don’t know definitively whether or not the two are friends, there’s evidence to suggest they’re cordial.
Put it this way, Markle and Prince William likely won’t be watching a soccer game or sipping on glasses of wine together in the near future unless it’s at an event as part of their jobs as working royals.
Did Prince William ignore Meghan Markle at Christmas church service?
On Christmas Day in 2018, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton, and Prince William — also known as The Fab Four — attended Christmas service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham looking very buddy buddy.
Then, in the following days, video footage surfaced of what appeared to be Prince William snubbing his sister-in-law as they exited the church.

Body language expert, Judi James, decoded the footage.
“This sense of distancing could be caused by tensions but it could also primarily be prompted by William’s aversion to royal ‘soap operas,’” James said.
“After the tragic dramas of his parent’s marriage William has always appeared keen to avoid any public emotional displays that might draw too much ongoing attention from the press and it could easily be this, rather than Meghan herself, that he’s keen to avoid,” she added.
And, to be fair, Markle may not have been trying to get her brother-in-law’s attention.
“On the surface it looked as though she turned around to smile at William while he kept himself busy tucking his scarf into his coat and her face did appear to have dropped as she turned back,” she added. “But she could have been smiling at Kate rather than William, meaning he might genuinely have been out of the conversational loop at that particular point.”
While it may have appeared Prince William used his scarf as a diversion, he may have simply been fixing his scarf. It’s such a subtle gesture we can’t quite tell what exactly happened.
Prince William may blame Meghan Markle for state of his relationship with Prince Harry
Prince Harry and Prince William have been rumored to be on the outs for a while now. They split their households, meaning they made a Cambridge office and a Sussex office, and haven’t been working together because their relationship as brothers has gotten so bad.
Recently, it came to light Prince Harry and Prince William didn’t ‘personally’ see each other for six months. After Markle married Prince Harry in May 2018, Prince William reportedly didn’t see his brother “personally” for six months (!) even though they lived next door to each other at Kensington Palace.
The reason Prince William and Prince Harry didn’t hang out for six months allegedly has to do with some advice the older prince gave his younger brother when he first started dating Markle in July 2016. This fact alone would make Markle and Prince William’s relationship awkward at best.
To make matters worse, Prince William may view Markle as a wedge between him and his brother, and therefore, remain standoffish with her.
However, the ice between the two may be beginning to thaw because the repore Prince William and Prince Harry is improving.
Prince Harry and Prince William reconnect after birth of Archie
Middleton and Prince William both made public statements congratulating Prince Harry and Markle on the birth of their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, last month.
Common ground may have been found between Prince Harry and Prince William now that they’re both dads. We’re guessing Markle and Prince William’s relationship has improved as well.
However, there’s been another turn in the ongoing saga of the fab four’s split and the drama surrounding Markle and the two princes. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have removed themselves from the charity, The Royal Foundation, they founded with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge just last year.
This move suggests that the fab four aren’t so fab at the moment. Prince William may blame Markle for the state of his relationship with his brother and as a result, be keeping her at arm’s length. What we can hope for, is that they’ll work out their issues, and as cheesy as it sounds, be one big happy family.
