Escape the heat: Movies coming out in summer 2019 – Daily Californian

Some people around you this summer might try to persuade you to go outside, but your preference may be to sit inside and relax all summer long. While the sun might feel nice at first, after a while, you can’t help it — sitting in an air-conditioned room just sounds more appealing. Make your escape by going to see a movie. If you walk to your local theater, you’ll get some outdoor time in with the promise of air conditioning’s sweet embrace on the other end. Here’s a list of intriguing movies coming out this summer that you can use to excuse yourself from the heat.

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (out now)

Summer is the perfect time to go watch a blockbuster. And this movie, with its giant monsters battling for dominance, fits the bill of just that. If such a type of movie is something you’d like to see, then Godzilla fighting all the other giant monsters should be a good way to spend two hours.

“The Dead Don’t Die” (out June 14)

Zombies and comedy can be an interesting and fun mix, especially since recent zombie-related media has made zombies less than scary. This film has that combination. So if you’d rather watch a movie that can make you laugh and has a little horror mixed in, then this film should do the trick.

“Men in Black: International” (out June 14)

Maybe you want comedy in your blockbuster movie? If so, this film could be just the thing you’re looking for. The hunt for some dangerous alien criminals provides the action, while the film’s comedic tone throughout makes for a fun and light affair.

“Toy Story 4” (out June 21)

Sometimes it’s nice to revel in childhood nostalgia, and this movie is a great way to do so. If you’re in the mood for a children’s film, then this sequel to Pixar’s very successful series about the lives of toys might be just your thing. If it’s anything like most other Pixar movies, it’ll be pretty good — no need to feel embarrassed about seeing a children’s movie. Prepare for the likelihood of tears, however.

Spider-Man: Far From Home” (out July 2)

If you enjoy Marvel movies, then chances are, this movie is already on your radar. The same is true if you’re a Spider-Man fan. And it should also be a good time if you enjoy all the angst of movies with high school-aged protagonists. It’s got superpowers and superpowered villains, in addition to high school drama.

“Midsommar” (out July 3)

Sometimes the best way to cool off is with a chill running down your spine. If you enjoy horror, then this film from “Hereditary” director Ari Aster is something you shouldn’t miss. Besides, summer itself is an important aspect of the film, which should get you in the mood for (or terrified of) summer activities.

Go out there and watch some new movies. And remember to check to see which films are showing near you, as this is by no means a complete list. At the very least, even if you dislike what you choose to watch, you’ll have gotten to spend two hours in a dark, air-conditioned room. And sometimes, that’s all that matters in the summer.
