Here are the 5 best movies on the telly tonight

We’re not gonna lie… it isn’t a great selection today.

We pride ourselves on recommending quality here on JOE, and unfortunately… tonight’s movies on TV just aren’t up to scratch.

Which isn’t to say that there isn’t at least (and maybe only) one very good movie, and that the rest are completely devoid of any kind of entertainment value, but the selection as whole just isn’t the best we’ve ever seen.

Maybe it is because the first semi-final is on later – France V Belgium at 7pm – or maybe it is because people would rather head to the cinema mid-week, which we totally understand, as we have reviewed all of the new releases in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, right here:

But if you are sitting in, and insisting on watching a movie, here’s the best of what is on offer:

TUESDAY 10 JULY

The Quick And The Dead – Alibi – 9.00pm

Leo DiCaprio, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Gary Sinise and Gene Hackman fill out the most impressive cast for a Western we’re guessing you’ve never seen. A weirdly entertaining shoot-out movie from the director of Spider-Man and The Evil Dead.

Mammal – TV3 – 9.00pm

Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under) allows a homeless teenager (Barry Keoghan) to move into her home, primarily because he reminds her so much of her recently dead son. However, his ties to a violent gang and her angry ex-husband constantly threaten the weird bond between them.

Rush Hour 2 – ITV4 – 9.00pm

Chris Tucker. Jackie Chan. Kicking things in the face again. You know the drill. Never forget just how popular these movies were back in the day. In 2001, this sequel made $350 million at the box office. That’s more than Pacific Rim 2, Tomb Raider or Ocean’s 8 made this year, without taking inflation into account.

Alien: Resurrection – Film 4 – 10.45pm

With more and more time away from it, is it possible to look back at Resurrection and find it better than we thought it was at first viewing? No. Even the director of Amelie and the writer of The Avengers couldn’t save this mess. But, that being said, there is something perversely enjoyable about just how much of a mess it actually is.

Prince Avalanche – Film 4 – 12.35am

Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch get away from their city lives for a summer to work in the wilderness, but soon find that they don’t really enjoy each other’s company, and they actually miss the women they left behind. A breezy, slow-moving comedy.
