Stephen Colbert talks Donald Trump pardoning himself

With Donald Trump’s legal team arguing that Donald Trump basically is the law and can pardon himself if charged with any crime, Stephen Colbert responds.

Is the president of the United States above the law?

Let’s give you a quick update on this investigation by Robert Mueller into Donald Trump and his campaign. As the indictments pile up, Mueller is getting closer and closer to Trump himself. Mueller wants to interview Trump for more information, although the president of course refuses, and his lawyers’ defense is basically that Trump is the law. If Trump gets a subpoena, he will simply pardon himself, as his legal team insists.

Last night on The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert had something to say about that. After explaining the situation to his viewers, He is entertained by another excuse being given by Trump’s team, saying to be interviewed by Mueller would demean the office of the president around the world. “Now, if you’ll excuse us, the president has to go get spanked by a porn star while watching his shark stories,” Colbert mocks them as adding.

Rudy Giuliani argues that there’s nothing in the Constitution that limits Trump’s power to pardon himself. He adds that, no matter what the crime is – even if he “shot James Comey” – there’s no way to indict the president while he’s in office. I bet Richard Nixon would have liked to know that. Referring to Trump as a “one-man Purge,” Colbert says he might as well have his 2020 campaign slogan be, “Trump 2020: I could kill you in your sleep.”

However, we’re told not to worry, because the president can still be impeached. Responding to that, Colbert says House Republicans would need to agree to impeach Trump. Using a faux “clip from the future,” Colbert shows Paul Ryan saying, “That’s just what he does, we’ve learned to live with it.”

We’ll have to see what happens next with this investigation. It’s seeming more and more likely it’s going to end in bad news for Trump. As for Colbert, watch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS.
