Find Your Buzz in Japan With Three Different Kinds of Alcoholic Cokes
Japan continues to innovate with its wide selection of awesome exclusive drinks and snacks, usually things we can’t get in the United States. But there’s one particularly interesting new release that really sounds like a dream: the country’s first alcoholic Coke. Incidentally, it’s also Coke’s first alcoholic coke, or a Japanese twist on “chu-hai” beverages, essentially meaning fizzy alcoholic drinks.
The new Cokes will be revealed in Japan by the American company in three different versions, such as 3%, 5%, and 7% alcohol, including a lemon version, salty lemon, and honey and lemon. It sounds a whole lot like cough drops or medicine, but if it sounds like your cup of tea (or glass of Coke), it’s available in the Kyushu area of Japan right now. Each can will run about 180 yen, or about $1.50.

“We’ve started to experiment because, in the end, we are trying to follow the consumer. And, in the case of Japan, this is a relatively well-developed segment of low alcohol,” said Coca-Cola Chief Executive James Quincey. It makes sense, as it certainly seems like this is the kind of thing that would do well in Japan, especially as women in the country tend to prefer lower-level alcoholic beverages.
Unfortunately, if you were thinking there might be any sort of Coke flavoring in the drink, you’ll certainly be left disappointed. It’ll be more lemonade-y than anything else. But if it ends up doing well in Japan, we might potentially get a chance to try it out as it moves further west. That’d certainly be good news to kick the summer off with, right?
