Amazon Video Unveils New TV Shows And Movies For June (2018)
Amazon Video has revealed that it is going to be adding more than 100 new films and TV shows to its streaming platform in June.
These will include five new ‘Amazon Original’ TV series, a new Amazon Original film, and a typically eclectic mix of recent and vintage movies.
The new original series kick off on June 1st with All Or Nothing: New Zealand All Blacks. As its name suggests, this show – which will appear in 4K and HDR – follows the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team throughout its 2017 season, giving you a glimpse behind the scenes at what goes into putting together a world-beating sports team.
Also available from June 1st will be Amazon Original movie Wonder Wheel, a ‘dramatic tale of passion, violence and betrayal’ set amid the hustle and bustle of the Coney Island amusement park in the 1950s.
Transformers: The Last Knight is probably the ‘biggest’ film to come to Amazon Prime in June.
June 8th sees the launch of the second part of season one of Lost In Oz – Amazon’s Emmy Award-winning series based on the Wizard of Oz stories and characters. This is followed on June 15th by the second season of excellent ‘washed up lawyer makes good’ drama Goliath – which again will be available in 4K and HDR.
June 26th marks the arrival of the second half of Season One of animated kids show If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.
Wrapping up the new Amazon Original stuff is A Very English Scandal, a drama series about a British political scandal back in the 1970s starring Hugh Grant. Amazon can’t say yet what date this show will appear, but when it does it will be viewable in 4K HDR.
Scanning through the list of non-Amazon films being added in June uncovers a handful of highlights. If you’re after something made recently, the ‘big ones’ are the latest Transformers movie, the Oscar-nominated Ladybird, acclaimed James Franco starrer The Disaster Artist, and animated kids movie Sherlock Gnomes.
Lady Bird was probably a bit unlucky not to pick up any Oscars this year.
Highlights from the list of older catalog titles kick off with Breakdown: a genuinely tense thriller elevated by a great performance from Kurt Russell. Escape From Alcatraz sees Clint Eastwood teaming up with director Don Siegel to brilliant effect to tell the story of the only serious attempt to escape from San Francisco’s Alcatraz Prison.
There are a couple of good Martin Scorsese titles coming your way too: Shutter Island, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio in a Hitchcockian neo-noir set in a sinister psychiatric facility, and the under-rated Age Of Innocence period drama, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder.
Finally worthy of your time if you somehow haven’t seen them before are Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, the original 1977 Saturday Night Fever, and, if you’re in the mood for a bit of dumb 1980s nostalgia, The Running Man.
Here, in date order, is the full list of Amazon’s new titles for June.
