Entrepreneurs Ramona and Matt Haberkorn and the Bake Sale Bread Co. might just be appearing at pop-up events for now, but the couple has high hopes moving forward.

The couple recently started their business and will be in Fruita from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday for the Fruita Fourth Friday at the Vintage Common.

For Mother’s Day weekend, Bake Sale Bread Co. had its soft opening and took orders for the holiday. Ramona said the business got more orders than expected.

The Grand Valley-based bakery is a cottage micro bakery, taking special orders. Ramona hopes soon to have a commercial kitchen as Bake Sale has already had several wholesale requests and is looking at delivery. A store front is a dream for down the road.

The company primarily makes naturally leavened bread with sourdough starter kits. Not all breads have that tart flavor, however, but all use natural wild yeast.

Bake Sale also uses organic flour in its bread. The primary products are artisan breads and bagels.

“It’s a great product, all you really need is water, salt and flour,” Ramona said. “Those are our main ingredients other than specialty items.”

Bake Sale is not taking any daily orders, but has plans to take regular special orders. The company is working on a system to offer a subscription and delivery service. For information, visit Bake Sale Bread Co.’s Facebook and Instagram page or email [email protected].

The Haberkorns are treating the Bake Sale as a side business at the moment, but have hopes to expand hours and grow the business into a more full-time venture.

“We just really love making bread at home and cooking,” Ramona said. “We’ve had lots of people request that we make bread for them and we had made it for special events, so we thought we’d give it a go and see what response we get.”
