A Live-Action 'Monster Hunter' Movie Starts Production This September
What with the continued success of the Monster Hunter series, it was inevitable that we would end up with a live-action movie adaptation at some point. The good news is that this is now actually happening but the bad news is that it is being handled by the same production behind the Resident Evil films.
According to Variety, production for this live-action Monster Hunter movie will start in September with a budget of around $60 million. In addition, Paul W.S. Anderson is attached to direct the film and Milla Jovovich will be starring in an undisclosed role.
If you remember, this live-action Monster Hunter movie has been bubbling away for a while now and back in 2016, Impact Pictures explained the premise of the story around that time as well.
For every Monster, there is a Hero. An ordinary man in a dead end job discovers that he is actually the descendant of an ancient hero. He must travel to a mystical world to train to become a Monster Hunter, before the mythical creatures from that world destroy ours.
Now for anyone that has played a Monster Hunter game, then this narrative setup sounds very bizarre and weird.
What’s more, the Resident Evil movies are generally pretty terrible. Admittedly, they make money but I am somewhat concerned about the fate of this live action Monster Hunter movie if the Resident Evil films are anything to go by.
After all, the Resident Evil games are very narrative driven and have clear protagonists. The mainline Monster Hunter games are not like that at all and are all about playing co-operatively with other people to take down giant monsters.
I get why this production team is onboard for a live-action Monster Hunter movie, as the Resident Evil films have done well financially but I am not sure this team and premise, if the latter has remained unchanged since 2016, are the right way to go for a Monster Hunter movie.
