At the Movies: Melissa McCarthy, Gabrielle Union star in new movies
FAIRFIELD — Expect laughter, tears and fear when new movies arrive on the big screen Friday.
Melissa McCarthy and Gabrielle Union star in the two nationwide openings.
McCarthy is a dedicated housewife who is dumped by her husband in the comedy, “Life of the Party.”
She goes back to college and learns to embrace her new freedom and live life on her own terms. Maya Rudolph is featured. It’s rated PG-13.
Union leads the cast of “Breaking In,” playing a mother who will stop at nothing to rescue her two children who are being held hostage in a house designed with impenetrable security.
Billy Burke is also in the thriller, which is rated PG.
Opening in limited release are:
“The Assassin’s Code,” which centers on a rookie detective, the son of a dead, disgraced cop, working to solve his first major case under the watchful eye of a ghost-like assassin. It’s not rated.
“Terminal,” a thriller noir that follows assassins carrying out a sinister mission, a teacher battling a fatal illness, an enigmatic janitor and a curious waitress leading a dangerous double life. Their lives intertwine when murderous consequences unravel. Margot Robbie, Mike Myers, Simon Pegg and Max Irons are featured. It’s not rated.
“Revenge,” a horror film about a couple on a romantic getaway that’s interrupted when his sleazy friends arrive for unannounced hunting trip. Tension mounts and a shocking event leaves one of them for dead. It’s rated R.
“Dark Crimes,” based on the story of Krystian Bala, a Polish writer who was convicted of murder in 2007. What had been considered a perfect crime attracted attention when he published a novel that detailed a murder very much like the one frustrating the police. Jim Carrey stars. It’s rated R.
“Born Guilty,” a crime drama with Rosanna Arquette as a social worker who can’t resist the urge to intervene in her son’s life. It’s not rated.
“Higher Power,” which explores when the universe decides what it wants, it’s pointless to resist when a young man finds himself the unwilling test subject of a maniacal scientist. It’s rated R.
“The Seagull,” set in rural New England, which tells the story of reckless desire that wreaks havoc over Memorial Day weekend. Annette Bening and Saoirse Ronan star in the film, which is rated PG-13.
“Lu Over the Wall,” an animated feature about a little mermaid who comes ashore to join a middle-school rock band and propel them to fame. It’s rated PG.
“Another Kind of Wedding,” a comedy/drama about a couple whose wedding day becomes the perfect venue for their dysfunctional family to confront what tore them apart in the first place. Kathleen Turner and Frances Fisher star. It’s not rated.
“Class Rank,” which stars Olivia Holt, whose character dreams of going to Yale, but is ranked second in her high school class. She devises a plan to elect a fellow teen to the local school board and abolish the ranking system. It’s not rated.
“Mountain,” a documentary that features footage from drones, GoPros and helicopters. The film features mountaineers, ice climbers, free soloists, heliskiers, snowboarders, wingsuiters and parachuting mountain bikers. It’s not rated.
