May’s five must-see movies.
May marks the start of the annual Hollywood blockbuster season, but in truth there’s only a handful of big budget movies daring to take on Avengers: Infinity War over the next four weeks.
Melissa McCarthy and Charlize Theron are back just in time for Mothers’ Day (May 10) with the matriarchal-focused Life of the Party and Tully respectively, while America’s Kennedy clan are back in focus in the dramatisation of the event of July, 1969 in Chappaquiddick (May 10).
However, after a trawl through the line-up, Stuff has come up with this quintet of movies we think you must-see.

ISLE OF DOGS (May 3)
Isle of Dogs is the latest movie from the warped mind of Wes Anderson.
Indie-comedy favourite Wes Anderson returns to the stop-motion territory of his much-loved 2009 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox with this tale about a young boy who goes in search of his dog after the whole species is banished to an island due to an outbreak of illness.
Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum and Edward Norton are just some of the eclectic vocal cast on offer.
THE BREAKER UPPERERS (May 3)
Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek wrote, directed and star in The Breaker Upperers.
Hailed by US critics on its debut at March’s South by Southwest Film Festival, Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek’s black comedy focuses on two women who run a business which helps people from all walks of life “consciously uncouple”.
With an eclectic cast that also includes Rima Te Wiata, James Rolleston and Rose Matafeo, this Taika Waititi-produced tale fits very much into his other, more Kiwi cinematic universe.
UNSANE (May 10)
Claire Foy stars in Unsane.
Steven Soderbergh continues his movie renaissance (after earlier announcing his retirement) with this psychological thriller about a woman confined to a mental institution after she is pursued by a stalker.

DEADPOOL 2 (May 16)
The Merc with a Mouth is back in Deadpool 2.
Just when you thought you’d had enough Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) bad guy antics, he turns up as Cable, a new adversary for Ryan Reynolds’ merc-with-a-mouth.
Those who loved the 2016 original can expect more censor-baiting violence, button-pushing profanity and anarchic fun. Plus, there’s the added interest of or own Julian Dennison in a role currently shrouded in mystery.
SOLO: A STAR WARS MOVIE (May 24)
Solo: A Star Wars Story takes a look at the early life of the charismatic smuggler.
Despite a somewhat troubled production, hopes are high that is standalone Star Wars-prequel will be more Rogue One than Caravan of Courage.
Ron Howard is now the steady hand behind this space adventure which apparently details how Han Solo met Lando Calrissian and acquired the Millennium Falcon.
