It’s results night on the April 23 episode of ‘American Idol.’ Follow along with our recap to find out who’s moving on to the Top 10 of season 16!
For the first time on this season of American Idol, the decision of who will move on is in America’s hands — and only 10 of the remaining 14 artists will see the next week of competition. Six of the Top 10 spots will be chosen by voters, while the other four are picked by the judges. Maddie Poppe is the first contestant called onstage to hear her results…and she’s safe! To celebrate the exciting news, Maddie gives yet another epic performance, this time of “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles.
Next up is Michelle Sussett, who unfortunately, is not voted into the Top 10 by America. She has a chance to prove herself to the judges, though, and chooses to sing an original song called “I’m A Dreamer” to earn one of the final four slots. We’ll find out later if it’s enough for her to move on! Marcio Donaldson is up next, and he’s also not voted through by America. He sings Nick Jonas’ “Jealous” in hopes of getting one of the judges’ picks, but unfortunately, they don’t seem too impressed with his performance.
The next artist to get results is Cade Foehner, who’s advanced to the Top 10! He celebrates with a performance of “Bright Lights” by Gary Clark Jr., which gets the crowd on their feet. Garrett Jacobs hears his results next, and, like Michelle and Marcio, he’ll have to sing for survival, as he’s not voted into the Top 10. He performs “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” and brings judges Luke Bryan and Katy Perry to their feet.
Ryan Seacrest calls Gabby Barrett to the stage next, and she learns she’s advancing to the Top 10. Before taking her seat, she rocks out to a rendition of “Little Red Wagon” by Miranda Lambert. She’s followed by Dennis Lorenzo, who’s not voted through by America, and sings “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell in hopes of survival. He gets a standing ovation from all three judges.
The next contestant called to get results is Jonny Brenns, who also gets the disappointing news that he’s not automatically in the Top 10. Hopefully, his performance of “Demons” by Imagine Dragons will be enough for the judges to push him through! The next artist to the stage, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, does earn one of those Top 10 spots, and celebrates with a rendition of “Getting You Home” by Chris Young. So good!
Next, Ryan reveals that Mara Justine does not have enough of America’s votes for an automatic Top 10 spot, and she sings Rihanna’s “Love On The Brain” to try and win over the judges. Jurnee gets her results next, and also has to perform for her spot in that Top 10. She belts out “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman, which garners her cheers from the audience and a round of applause from the judges.
Up next is Michael J. Woodard, who earns the fifth spot in the Top 10. He impresses once again with his celebratory performance of “Believe In Yourself” by Diana Ross, and the crowd goes wild. That leaves just Ada Vox and Catie Turner left to find out their results. Ryan announces that Catie has earned the sixth Top 10 spot as voted by America, and she wows with a unique performance of “Havana” by Camila Cabello. Finally, Ada gives the last performance of the night, belting out “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” in hopes of moving onto the Top 10.
Now, it’s time for Katy, Luke and Lionel Richie to make their picks. Before Ryan even gives them the go-ahead, they collectively confirm Ada is in the Top 10, leaving just three spots left — and they go to Jurnee, Michelle Sussett and Dennis Lorenzo.
So, the Top 10 is…Maddie, Cade, Gabby, Caleb, Michael, Catie, Ada, Jurnee, Michelle and Dennis! They’ll perform for America’s votes once again on April 29.
