The biggest names in bridal fashion showcased their spring and summer 2019 collections during Bridal Fashion Week April 11-14 in New York. It was no surprise that many designers, like Theia and Reem Acra,drew inspiration from this year’s royal wedding in Britain, with reimagined contemporary looks for the soon-to-be-duchess, Meghan Markle. Other designers like Ines Di Santo and Vera Wang presented gowns that were both bold and unabashedly feminine, laden with floral appliqués and colorful details. Here’s a look at what we saw at Bridal Fashion Week.

Inspired by Harry and Meghan

The excitement surrounding the May 19 royal wedding has seeped into the bridal fashion world. Theia constructed gowns in true baroque fashion, with rich and opulent embroideries and modern form-fitting silhouettes adorned in crystal beadwork. Monique Lhuillier took a soft and clean approach with regal lace confections paired with cathedral-length trains, fit for a queen or two.

Ball Gowns with a Sheer Twist

Ball gowns have long been a staple in the bridal fashion world. However, this traditional silhouette has received a modern makeover from the designers Ines Di Santo, Rivini, Reem Acra, and Berta, whose collections featured voluminous sheer skirts and bodices dripping in sparkles and texture, which made for a dramatic entrance.

In true spring fashion, many of the gowns from Ines di Santo, Galia Lahav and Vera Wang featured blooming floral details, from elaborate pink hued florals to intricately cut laser blooms embroidered into gowns that conjured a whimsical and flirty feeling.

There was no shortage of skin on the runways this season, though gowns that provided coverage while accentuating design details also emerged on the runways, with covered necklines and full sleeves by Justin Alexander and Morilee by Madeline Gardner.

When it comes to a designer who has mastered the art of simple elegance, Amsale Aberra, who died earlier this month, has made this look iconic for more than 30 years. “The final collection designed by Amsale Aberrareflects the understated drama that she will forever be known for,” said Sarah Swann, the Amsale Studio director. The collection was an ode to classic silhouettes inspired by cathedral elegance with grand and modern gowns accented with draped bows and crystal beading.
