IMDb Users Pinpoint The Movies We're Dying To See This Summer

“Avengers: Infinity War” topped all three of IMDb’s “Most Anticipated Summer Movies” lists in a report published Tuesday. In the past, the summer movie season was demarcated as the sweaty, sun-splashed period between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. And who could argue the timing? But today, as Major League Baseball plays beneath snowflakes in an admittedly enchanting collision of spring and winter, the 2018 summer movie season is surprisingly close at hand here in mid-April.

Ever with its finger on the pulse of the moviegoing public, IMDb on Tuesday released its internal findings on what we’ll likely stampede to see this summer. Going off of page views and “Watchlist” additions from the site’s more than 250 million unique monthly visitors, every title that excelled belongs to a major studio; and most all promise a one-two punch of action and adventure.

Lording atop the list with a reported ensemble cast of 70-plus characters and a budget exceeding $300 million is Avengers: Infinity War, the reputed “royal rumble of the Marvel Comics universe,” and the film whose April 27 release date is responsible for ushering in the season before Mother’s Day.

From IMDb’s “Most Anticipated Summer Movies,” the following titles have received the most page views to date:

  1. Avengers: Infinity War (Disney)
  2. Deadpool 2 (20th Century Fox)
  3. Solo: A Star Wars Story (Disney)
  4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Universal)
  5. Mission Impossible – Fallout (Paramount)
  6. Ocean’s 8 (Warner Bros.)
  7. Incredibles 2 (Disney)
  8. Ant-Man and the Wasp (Disney)
  9. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (Universal)
  10. The Meg (Warner Bros.)

Meanwhile, the site’s Watchlist additions of upcoming summer films currently rank in this order:

  1. Avengers: Infinity War
  2. Deadpool 2
  3. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
  4. Solo: A Star Wars Story
  5. Incredibles 2
  6. Oceans 8
  7. Ant-Man and the Wasp
  8. Mission Impossible – Fallout
  9. The Predator (20th Century Fox)
  10. Sicario: Day of the Soldado (Columbia)

A third list sorted page views from users of IMDb Pro–the subscription information database for the entertainment industry–using the service’s iPhone app:

  1. Avengers: Infinity War
  2. Solo: A Star Wars Story
  3. Ocean’s 8
  4. Skyscraper (Universal)
  5. Deadpool 2
  6. Mission Impossible – Fallout
  7. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
  8. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
  9. The First Purge (Universal)
  10. Ant-Man and the Wasp

“It’s no surprise Avengers: Infinity War tops all of our summer lists–there’s never been a movie like it,” said IMDb entertainment editor Arno Kazarian. “Its release comes at a time when the comic book movie genre is at the zenith of its creative and commercial power, and it directly follows Black Panther, which elevated the genre to new heights.”

Hollywood’s parameters for this year’s summer movie season have it taking place between April 27 and Labor Day (Monday, Sept. 3). Each film listed above is scheduled for theatrical release sometime in that window.

According to Matt Kumin, head of IMDbPro, last year the site’s ranking metrics forecasted seven of 2017’s top 10 box office finishers. In terms of under-the-radar films to remember if the cineplex is sold out of superhero fare, IMDb’s senior film editor Keith Simanton has a few recommendations.

“There are titles that have some great buzz that audiences haven’t discovered yet, like Hereditary, a horror film from A24 that debuts on June 8th; or Tag, [a] comedy coming June 15th. They both might be the sleepers of the summer. The Spy Who Dumped Me, on August 3rd, also might be a surprise.”
