Gossip: Zielinski to Liverpool, Maguire to Man United
LIVERPOOL BACK FOR ZIELINSKI
We do not usually give too much credence to Tutto Mercato Web but it is Monday morning and these are desperate times. They claim that Liverpool are once again interested in Napoli central midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who was a Liverpool target before he moved to Napoli in 2016 for about £14m.
They will have to pay a hell of a lot more in 2018 as his buy-out clause is apparently set for £57.6m. Hmmm. Having already committed to spending a similar amount on Naby Keita, we are struggling to believe this one.
MOURINHO: ‘NO CRAZY SPENDING’
How can Manchester United bridge the gap to Manchester City? Not by spending a load of money, apparently. “We are not going to spend more than we can. We are not going to do anything crazy,” Mourinho said. “We are just trying to improve a little bit more. That’s what we are going to try.” When you are 16 points behind, you need to do more than ‘improve a little bit more’, Jose.
So how does this ‘no crazy spending’ thing marry with the latest claims that Manchester United will pay £35m for Harry Maguire this summer? Is that not just a little crazy?
TIERNEY NOT KEEN ON MAN UNITED MOVE
Manchester United have long been linked with Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney but The Times claim that they ‘may have their work cut out in convincing Tierney to depart just yet’ as he really does love his boyhood club. And United will have to offer north of £20m to open negotiations with the Hoops.
“I’m not thinking about anyone other than Celtic just now,” he said. “I’m enjoying my career here; I’ve just signed a six-year deal, so if that doesn’t say long-term, I don’t know what does.”
AND THE REST
Newcastle are set to sign goalkeeper Martin Dubravka permanently…Aston Villa and Celtic both want to sign Yeovil Town’s 22-year-old Welsh defender Tom James…Leyton Orient striker and Zimbabwe international Macauley Bonne, 22, has attracted interest from Shrewsbury, Portsmouth and Burton.
