MARTINSBURG–The first annual Community Kite Day at the Martinsburg Roundhouse was held by Transitional Training Services and 501(c)3 nonprofit Center Incorporated Saturday.

Started at the same time in September 2017, the organizations share Suite 120 for office space in North Queen Street’s Hub Suites. Using their certified social worker and life coaches, the organizations provide about 12 months of financial and lifestyle counseling to recovered addicts, abuse victims and trauma victims.

“This is my first time–I’m still learning how to put kites together,” said Veterans Affairs Medical Center Peer Support Specialist LaRue Nelson as she tried to tie a kite’s string on properly. Nelson also works as a Peer Support Specialist for Center Inc. “We’re very community oriented, and we like to do things for the community.”

The organization provides a variety of family-oriented events for their clients, to help them develop positive hobbies and lifestyle choices that will give them a framework for a new life when they finish working with the program, which has varying costs, depending on whether the person is capable of paying and has insurance.

“It started because I had a vision for this community. We do allow addicts who have been recovered for at least one year, along with trauma and abuse survivors, to volunteer to be life coaches,” said Center Inc. Founder and CEO J. Watkins.
