Healthy Kids Running Series promotes healthy lifestyle in Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN – Close to 100 kids went for a run at Highland Park in Johnstown Sunday as part of the Healthy Kids Running Series.

The Johnstown chapter is part of a national organization which aims to help kids build the foundation of healthy lifestyle.

“Healthy Kids Running Series is designed to combat the increasing rates of child obesity in America,” said Jeff Long, Healthy Kids Running Series founder. “My goal is to motivate and inform kids to be healthy and active. We are providing a fun

environment to improve their self-esteem and inspire them to adopt a ‘Get Up and Go’ attitude. The support and growth of our series have confirmed our value and mission.”

The event is for kids ages 2 to 14 years old.

Each week, participants run between 50 yards and 1 mile depending on their age.

The series lasts for 5 weeks, and each participant has the opportunity to earn points each week.

Organizers says this is a great way to get the younger generation active and for them to meet new people.

“They love running here,” said volunteer Cameron Ferguson. “Today a little boy named Noah brought a friend today because he was explaining how much he loved it from last year. It brings kids around here and everyone just loves it so much, it’s one of those great things.”

The Healthy Kids Running series happens twice a year.

The spring session began Sunday April 15 and will run until Sunday May 13.

If you’re interested in getting involved, the runs take place each Sunday at Highland Park from 4:30 to 5:30.

It costs $10 to participate.
