Kenneth “Buzz” E. Reid Jr., 79, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018, at Lehigh Valley Hospice. He is survived by his wife Marion (Lupin), with whom he would have celebrated 57 years of marriage this June.
Born in Palmerton, he was the son of the late Kenneth E Reid Sr. and Ruth (Rehrig) Reid of Lehighton. He graduated from Lehighton High School in 1956 and entered the U.S. Marine Corps shortly thereafter.
After serving in the Marines, Buzz earned his Bachelor of Education from East Stroudsburg University and took his first teaching position in Binghamton, New York. From there, he became a member of the Lehighton Area School District faculty and served as head of the Mathematics Department for kindergarten through grade 12. He went on to obtain a master’s degree in mathematics from Kutztown State College and received advanced credits from Lehigh University. During his 11 years at Lehighton, Buzz was also head track coach for the Indians, leading the team to three championships in the Lehigh Valley League. He also served as assistant football coach while in Lehighton.
After his time in Lehighton, Buzz spent 19 years with the Pleasant Valley School District. During his tenure at PV, he held the positions of assistant high school principal and athletic director, principal of the John C. Mills Middle School, assistant superintendent of schools and superintendent of schools. In 2006, Pleasant Valley School District inducted him into their Hall of Fame.
Buzz was an avid golfer in his younger years and a member of the Lehighton Elks, serving as a past exalted ruler. He was also a charter member of the West End Rotary Club and member of the West End Lion’s Club. Buzz was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. Always a sports fan, especially of Ohio State and Woody Hayes, Buzz never missed an opportunity to watch the Buckeyes. In addition to spending time with his family, Buzz’s best memories are of his years spent teaching and coaching.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his son, Mark, husband of Crystal of North Andover, Massachusetts; two daughters: Sally, wife of Dan Dixon of Granger, Indiana, and Mary, wife of Tony Piccone of West Chester; and five grandchildren: Sam and Audrey Dixon, John Reid, and Sofia and Nick Piccone.
