When celebrity designer and reality TV personality Linda Barker moved to a house in East Dulwich in South London in 1999 with husband Chris and daughter Jessica, she found she liked the area so much that, five years later, she bought a house across the street too.

‘I was attracted to the house’s character and space,’ she says of the second property, which is now on the market with Munday’s estate agents for £1.35 million.

‘It has very generous and symmetrical proportions – what I call “good bones”. It was structurally sound but needed a lot of updating and had a huge garden that was completely overgrown. The place was ripe for renovation.’

Linda – whose TV career has included Changing Rooms, I’m A Celebrity… and Splash! – intended the property to be an investment, so decided to turn it into a house that could be hired out as a filming set.

‘I specifically designed areas, such as the kitchen and master-suite bathroom, to have space for filming,’ explains Linda, 56.

The Victorian villa’s kitchen has been used by top names including Ainsley Harriott and former MasterChef presenter Loyd Grossman – and two series of the BBC cookery show Indian Food Made Easy, starring Anjum Anand, were shot there.

The house has also been used by TV’s This Morning and as a backdrop to numerous photoshoots for magazines, catalogues and websites.

Linda has now decided to up sticks and return to her native Yorkshire, having bought a Georgian renovation project in the county.

The Dulwich house had already been extended by the previous owner when Linda bought it, but she increased the sense of interior space by making the lounge and kitchen/dining area open-plan.

She also replaced the downstairs back wall with bi-fold doors to give direct access to the garden. ‘Opening up the ground floor and connecting the house to the garden made a huge difference to the feel of the property,’ she says.
